Paint job project finished!
Just wanted to share with everyone my latest project on my 86 951. A lot was done so I'll try to remember everything and list it without being too long-winded.
Of course the original single stage guards red paint had seen better days. I do like the look of the single stage red after a polish and wax but I decided to go with the guards red with a clear coat.
Starting in October of 2011, I disassembled/removed almost everything on the exterior and a fair amount on the interior. The doors and the windshield were the only things that stayed on.
I had the hood, fenders, and door handles bead blasted. I replaced every single gasket, seal, and trim piece on the exterior. Thankfully, Porsche provides the parts list on their website. That's under "Porsche Classic" for those of you that might not know. Most parts were readily available but some, like the plastic side skirts, had to be ordered from Germany. The new plastic cowl/blower motor cover is a nice touch. I've wanted to replace that for a long time. Also replaced red fender bolts with yellow zinc fender bolts from Rennbay. Love it or hate it, I got the Stage V header panel. I like the added aggressive look it gives to the car. It's far from a perfect fit, even after filler and other adjustments, but it works for now. Most likely will be having a factory header panel painted as well so I can swap pieces.
I had a few things updated/changed too. The factory alarm key hole was welded shut. No need for that eyesore. Along the rocker panels, I decided against reapplying stone guard. If anything happens, I'll just get it repaired. The diamond hole in the rocker panels was filled too. I also converted my sunroof to manual. The motorized assembly had busted welds so I just removed it. I hate sunroofs so I doubt I'll remove it much but now I can if I want to. The front splitter that I destroyed was replaced too...as I'm sure this one will be replaced eventually. If I can make it 2 years on a splitter, I'm happy. I'd be happier if someone made one this style that wasn't fiber glass.
Items I didn't get to but will this winter are replacing the wheels with black Cup II's and installing the aftermarket 968 spoiler. While I have the rubber spoiler off I am going to repair the hatch. As you are familiar with the frames separating from the glass. Mine is actually not that bad compared to most that I've seen. I just think it would be a worthwhile repair.
That's what I can remember for now. Here are a few pics of the progress and finished product. It's really hard to capture how great the guards red looks in pictures. It's amazing in person! The paint is very smooth. No orange peel at all. Hope you like it.

Thanks guys!
Darwin, yeah at Cignatta's. I'm still there on Saturdays. Remember I fixed your ABS problem? Hope all is going great with your car. Last I remember reading, you had done some pretty incredible stuff.
Alpineace, I know the front header panel is a love it or hate it thing. And the rear bumper doesn't particularly bother me. Sure, I would like to weld in the 968 rear end but then someone will say "why don't you just buy a 968 and turbocharge the 3.0L?". Then someone will say "why did you spend all that money on a 968 when you can just buy a 911?" It could go on forever. So until I win the lottery and can buy one of everything...I'm perfectly content with my 951 as it is.
