Is a new ignition cylinder and new key only solution?

Should be the same key as the door handle. Remove a door handle and take it to the locksmith to have a key made. More expensive option, have the locksmith come to you.

Was years ago, but lost my keys and called a lock smith. Was locked out of the vehicle. They guy took a blank and cut it by hand simply by the marks made when the blank was placed in the lock. I recall it took about an hour and about a hundred bucks. Key was able to both open the doors and start the car.
Good luck.

I just went through this, I had a key cut by Sunset Porsche using the VIN. Just had to email a copy of the title doc and my driver license and one week plus less than $60 later the problem was solved!

+1 - Went thru this same procedure only with one of those expensive keys for a Mercedes (not Sunset, but an MB dealer). I had to go pick it up in person though, with proper i.d. and car registration info.

Yep - just had Sonnen Porsche cut me a key to VIN. They just require proof of ownership. Worked great!

You can also use a cheap-o blank from a key store and have them cut that, vs buying a new lighted head and blank (~$40 or +) from the dealer.

So is any dealer/key shop able to cut a key with just the vin?

Dealer can cut the key with VIN and proper proof of ownership. Keyshop/kiosk can provide a cheapie blank if you think you'll find your nice keys again or they are in the car or something.
