coolant and oil pressure question
I recently replaced some hoses on my 87 951 and ever since then things have been a little weird. As I stated in another recent thread I had coolant coming out of my overflow but that problem seems to have stopped.
However, when I shut the car off the pump which runs to cool the turbo sounds different. Almost like a pump which has lost it's prime. Is there a separate bleed for the turbo? I put a pressure tester and bled the whole system according to Clark's but the problem remains.
Last question - I installed a SPA oil pressure and oil temperature gauge. I am getting the temp from the oil pan. Any idea what I should set the alarms at?
Thanks for the help!

Second question first. I used to have an early 911 I used for track events in the PCA. The word at the time was to shut it off at 250 F oil temp. I know, different car, just my $.02
I have replaced all the coolant hoses and the little turbo pump worked fine after. When you take the cap off the coolant tank, you can see the flow from the pump. (Take the cap off with the engine cold and strart/stop the engine to get the pump to run).

Assuming you're running synthetic oil, I wouldn't be worried until my pan temps get to ~250F or higher.
Check to make sure you really do have coolant pumping through the turbo pump. If so, I wouldn't worry about the change in sound. You could be hearing a difference icaused by:
- fluid returning back into the reservoir caused by a different level in the reservior
- pump bearings being hot

I also measure my oil at that position.
Around town, you should not see >220. On the track in hot weather, a stock 951 shouldn't really get much higher than that, perhaps 230-240. On my modified 951 (~320rwhp) with the stock cooler, I was seeing 260 in VERY hot weather.
I currently have two factory oil coolers now and see a max of 230 on the track. Around town it rarely gets above 190.

I have the alarms on my SPA gauge set at 235 for oil and 225 for water. It's important to establish a baseline for what is normal on your car. At these temps i knew it was creeping up and probably is the result of a mechanical issue or the cooling system can't keep up.
The peak temps I've recorded were actually from sitting in NYC traffic on the way home from the track!

Thanks for all the info. I do see the coolant flowing in the reservoir after shutting down. Usually when you hear your engine making a slightly different tone it means something. Hopefully not as some have stated.
Any input on oil pressure for the alarm? I believe I am running brad penn 5w40 right now.

Any input on where to set the alarm for oil pressure?
