Default Track car engine (non Porsche) discussion (GT3 chasing)

So I am at a point where I want to hunt GT3's. Its simply incredible how fast they are out of the box, they definitely punch above their weight.

So I have my AE86, and are looking at engine options. The goal is for 5-600WHP, stay light, under 900kg. Current thoughts are

3UZFE (bore stoke to 5.0 and add cams etc)
F20C (bore stroke to 2.5 and turbo)
13B PP Turbo

I am thinking rotary is the way to go at this stage, light, low CG... thoughts?

You don't need anything like that power level to beat GT3s. 350whp in a 1200kg car is more than enough. And if it involves racing with corners you don't need anything like that either.

Thats a big call... I have seen many cars with 500+HP get left behind around the track by GT3's (997 versions).

Install an Evo motor and drivetrain. You can have your power and AwD.
I'm not sure I'd go down the whole Rotary route. Seem to be too brittle. Not into the V8 in tiny body things so much either. I'd go something that is reliable and has plenty of aftermarket following i.e. cheap and plentiful upgrades. FJ20DET or how 'bout the KA24. I'm not so up on these things but I'd agree with Steve in that you don't need uber power in a 900kg car.

Are you talking 997GT3RS or an actual Cup Car?

Obviously they can't drive (or their cars are crap). Cup cars are quick but I am assuming you are talking road going versions of the GT3. They are fast but nothing special.

remember the Bugatti Veron is ~500 hp per ton. And you're looking for 600rwhp from 600 kgs. well that's more then 500 hp per ton, That is massive power. Patricks solution with the EVO drivetrain is a good idea.

Thats how the VW is quick, it's got 4motion, AWD.

Why not an sr20? They fit well in that chassis and can make huge power reliably.
If you are tracking it, my suggestion is get the motor that makes the best power (power curve that is not super peaky...like all at 7000rpm) reliably. If it "only" makes 350hp but you can forget about it and just drive, that's way better than 500hp that only works sometimes, IMO.

The SR20 is a crappy motor. the F20C craps all over it, and then some more. (no offence to sr lovers)

Yes talking about Cup Cars...

FJ is a little too old tech for me!
