Default Exhaust material? Filler rod?

I have searched but have not found anything definitive on the material used for the exhaust. The manifolds are 321? What about the crossover pipe and the section by the starter where I need to install the wideband O2 bung? I have a SS bung to weld in but am not sure on which wire to weld with. I have mild steel and 308 on hand. The headers are cracking but I am not sure what filler rod to use on them either. The section by the starter is mildly magnetic so it is either cold worked 300 series or just 400 series. Any hints?

Thank you,
Mark

I ask about the crossover because the Lindsey two piece I have has the v-band clamp and it leaks. I'm thinking about welding on two three bolt flanges and want to make sure I use the correct material in the weld.

308L is usually a good choice for "I don't know what stainless it is, and I don't want post weld cracking". 347 is also a good choice for this situation. If you can find them, Brutus tig or Eutectic Castolin 680 are the $hit
As far as being mildly magnetic I would think that it is pretty well annealed by now, so I don't know if being cold worked is the cause of it being mildly magnetic.
I doubt it is a 400 series steel (because of the poor corrosion resistance in that service), it's more likely 300 series or a duplex steel.

Thank you Dave. From what I understand 409 is pretty common in exhaust but can be welded with 308L as well. So I guess the point is moot. Looks like I will be buying 304 flanges and welding with 308L on the cross pipe.

Correct. Technically, does it matter? Yes. Does it matter much? Definitely not.

It is looking more and more like they are truly made of Inconel. Please see other current thread or search for Inconel.
