Default I think my cat might be going.......

So I think my Cat is bad. It sounds like a can of rocks. Is this a typical failure description? I have an 86 bone stock Turbo. What are my options? What can I do till I get a new one? What’s everyone’s recommendation on after market cats?

I have a complete system (stock exhaust from the downpipe with known working cat) and sport cat back that is just taking up space in my garage and I'm willing to deal. It's oof of a and 86 as well.

Depending on your state, you may be better off removing it

Our cars breathe a bit better without them anyway.

I haven't seen that happen on a 951, but it happened to a friend on a Mercedes. The honeycomb stuff in the cat melted and cracked apart, making it sound like a metal box full of rocks! New factory cats are absurdly expensive. Test pipes are available for a few hundred dollars, but if you need a cat for smog compliance that won't work. Used cats are easy to come by, but most are 25 years old and may or may not function very well for smog purposes (and can get restrictive). You can have your cat cut out and replaced with a universal cat fairly cheaply if that meets your smog needs or you can get a full aftermarket replacement as shown in the link below. I think those are pretty much your options...
