Default 944 Turbo S - magazine review from 1988

A friend of mine, who is a collector of old car magazines, gave me an issue of Automobile from April 1988. I scanned in the review of the brand new Turbo S.

"even though, at nearly 3000 pounds, it's not a featherweight sports car."

If only that were true today.

Imagine the possibilities if the development of these cars were allowed to continue through today.

So what happened to the "rumored" 2.7L 16v 944S Turbo?

I have the issue of Automobile from 1988 when they tested the 944 Turbo S vs the 911 Turbo. " A Tail of two Turbo's"

Porsche was in dire financial distress in the early 90's. They decided to continue forward with the proven model and spend their R&D money on the 911platform for racing and dealership sales. Sport car buyers in the $50K range in 1989 ( That's close to $125K in today's dollars) thought that the more cylinders you had the better the car. A four cylinder turbo sports car didn't come with bragging rights, if you were/are into that sort of conversation. I friend with a 911 Carrera couldn't believe my modded 89 944 Turbo 2.5 4 cylinder was SO much faster than his car back in 1994. This car was hitting 330whp - 345 wt, and I wouldn't walk away, I ran away from him every time we had the chance to run together.

I'm sure the engineers used some the ideas learned from the front engined cars for later models.

It's interesting that turbo 4 cylinder motors are coming back into the higher end of the market. The new Ford turbo motors are showing much promise. Who would have thought the best selling Ford truck would have a twin turbo six just a few years ago?

I can believe it.

I'm pretty active in the PCA and there are a lot of mid-late 80s Carrera's.

My car isn't anywhere near 350rwhp and I walk away from them like they're standing still in a straight line. Heck my car gives my buddy's 993 a run for its money.

I remember there being a review of the 951 where the reviewer had gone to the factory and gotten a "test" car to play with. He speculated that it was the 2.7L turbo. Had a couple anecdotal stories about him on the autobahn playing with other fast cars (of the time). I always thought it was horse ****

I'll see if I can find it tonight when I get home

Great read, as I hadn't seen that article before. Interesting it was as quick as the 911 turbo to 100KPH(62MPH)
Thanks for sharing

Interesting how the same level of power and acceleration can be had in a minivan today. Also love the mustache.
