Question Purchesed an '86 944 Turbo of unkonwn millage. Need advice for plan of action.

I have poorchesd a Poorscha 951 for $1500. The odo stoped at 74k miles about 3 years go so im estimating it to be round 125k miles now. The good is that it drives and drives well, the paint is good (repainted), the interior is well, the front seat are in good condition.
The bad:
- a leaky valve gasket (no clue how bad yet)
- no power steering pump and belt (those came separately with the purchase),
- the oil pressure gauge is stuck at top position
- breaks need changing
- ebreak wire is snapped
- the rad fans work by an ON/OFF switch
- and the windshield wipers do not turn off

My question is the following:
Do i tempt my luck and work out the problems with the engine then move to the rest of the car or fix the breaks and other problems and save up for those infamous ls1 engine swaps?

Just my opinion;

With an unknown history i would do the belts (timing and balance) and waterpump. This is a 'while your in there' moment for changing all the front end seals and also fixing the leaking valve cover gasket.

The pegged oil pressure gauge can possibly be caused by the two leads on the sending unit being swapped, this is plausible if work was completed in that area and it was put on wrong. The other likely scenario is a bad sending unit.

Rad fans working through on and off switch scares me a little as the wiring may or not be hacked to shreds. To get this working correctly again, you will need to investigate what made them do the switch.. whether the car was over heating or simply a bad fan switch or fan relay.

For the wipers, i would start at the multi function switch (AKA wiper stalk). Clean the contacts and see what happens.

This sounds like a nice car with potential, as long as the engine bay is not a complete disaster of rubber turning to dust, hacked up wiring and oil leaks i would just repair the issues and enjoy the car.

I would plan for rod bearings in the near future if you dont do that ahead of time. No telling how the car was treated, oil changes, type of oil too many unknowns.

Always check the fuel lines. If original they could burst and create a fire and burn up the car. Good luck and don't forge to post pics.

First off what are your plans? Even if you want to star modifying it, from experience enjoy it a little before taking the engine apart and refreshing. Then it becomes an eternal "while I'm there" project!

Just check compression and leak test
- refresh the timing belt, tensioner and pulleys
- if leak test is good and compression, front seal kit, "while youre there changing belts
- tap the oil gauge with youre finger to see if it works, split wire or the oil sender
- for the fans, your wiring fromn the resistances (white round things near the battery) that pass under the dash to the fuse box is probably all busted, and you can take the fan relay and open it and reweld the internal weld spots. Mine had a crack on a weld and then worked perfectly.

Enjoy it

Good post Dr. I should point out that the fan resistors in the 86 are behind the glove box (above computers) inside the car sadly, freaking tight spaces lol.
