Default Asbestos use in the Porsche 944/951

While exploring my options for fixing the exhaust manifolds I came across information that Asbestos was used in the packing under the header heatshields.

This is a serious health concern and I will not be unpacking these for repair not sending them to a shop to do this. Was asbestos used in any other areas in the car?

Clutch? Brakes? Hood liner?

I think a pad over the fuel level sending unit under the rear hatch mat uses asbestos.

I imagined asbestos would not be used in cars in '86 but I guess I was wrong.

This is why whenever I work on my Porsche I wear a proper military-spec gas mask manufactured in a ISO 9001 certified facility.

These cars are probably Germany's way of getting back at us after WWII

Take a look here:

http://www.**********/porsche_951_exhaust_header_faq.htm

Sometime in 1989, Porsche discontinued the Insulated Headers (probably due to Asbestos concerns). The basic header remained the same, sans the insulation. Part numbers continued on with (951.111.129.05 for the 2-3 header, and 951.111.127.07). I don’t have details on what changed on these very late, post North America’s model headers. Below is a picture of one from a euro model. From what I have seen in the past, it appears to be a standard header without the asbestos insulation and metal heat shields.

interesting. I've got late headers, don't think i've got anything to worry about. my car is an 86 with most of the engine being "late" with no records shown of new engines. Same engine number as original too

All headers with heatshields have asbestos inside from what I understand.

You have to ingest it for it to be hazardous. Were you planning on using cut up 951 manifold in your kitchen?

Engine oil and antifreeze is poisonous too...

You have to breathe in the particles. Handling, grinding, disturbing it releases those particles. Opening up those heatshields to weld the manifold can do this as well.

No need to be coy, asbestos is a very serious health risk.

Soak the asbestos in water, health risk becomes minimal.

It is not as dangerous as it sounds. Exposure to asbestos dust is dangerous, but so is smoking. Both take years and years of inhaling, to kill you.

When researchers talk about "fiber burden" they are referring to the number of asbestos bodies in a section of human tissue.

The longer a person worked in an asbestos plant, the greater the amount of fibers that accumulated in the tissue inside their lungs. This accumulation, or "lifetime fiber burden," is directly related to the occurrence of asbestos-related diseases.

This is incorrect. Mesothelioma is no laughing matter. Drive through Wittenoom in my home state of Western Australia to realize how bad asbestos can be.

Perhaps you should do a little more reading on asbestos... It is extremely dangerous, and never leaves your system.
