engine break in procedure?

I've always wondered about the "take it easy" method. I mean it's not like race motors have a few hundred miles to putt around town before being thrown on the track. They're redlined on a dyno as infants.

That said I used 5w30 rotella T and changed it after the first 10 minute startup, then again at 100 miles. Didn't run boost till then or rev over 3000. I'm probably in the 500 mile range now and am running castrol 20w50 and 15psi, no problems. Just made me feel better to be easy on her.
