Boost issues
I recently had my timing and balance shaft belts retensioned by a well respected and knowledgeable garage. I have had a problem with them before but I thought maybe it was just a rare mistake based on their reputation, which is very good. Upon picking up my car I was surprised that they had cleaned and reinstalled my K&N air filter. I wasn't happy that they had done unauthorized work and charged a half hour labor and shop supplies totalling $75.00. I was planning on cleaning the filter over the long dark Minnesota winter because I thought allowing the filter to dry was important. Driving the car home it hesitated under boost badly, which it has never done before. Here is my question, could an over oiled or "wet" air filter be the cause? I called the shop and was told the MAF barn door would not be adversely effected by excess oil. I am bringing it back tomorrow to them to look it over. What should I expect and as a customer what would you want to see happen. I really want to take good care of this car and if ya can't trust a good mechanic what can a guy do. Thanks in advance for your input.

Wish I could, but no place to work on it.... lots of condo rules. I have done most of the maint. but belt retensioning is out of my league for now. As I said I was going to clean and oil the K&N myself.

You say MAF and you say "barn door"... those generally don't go together.
I assume you meant "AFM" in which case, I agree, I would not expect an over-oiled K&N filter to cause issues with an AFM and the barn door operation. Generally where you have problems are on cars where you've converted to a MAF setup. The oil gets on the MAF sensor and distorts the readings.

That's BS. If you did not ask them to do it I would raise hell about being charged for it. I do not use much filter oil at all with the QUAD-M installed, but do use the filter cleaner more often. This list is one of the best sources to "fix it yourself" out there, definitely find a friend with a garage it's well worth the trouble over someone elses grubby hands on your car!
