With a lifter out, how do you tell if it is good? Pushing on the center to see if it moves? If so how much should it move, and how stiff should it be?

I'm interested to see any other responses....
In theory, if they're full of oil, the button shouldn't move at all.
Since the day I brought my car home, I've always had at least one lifter rattle on cold starts.... it would pump down over night. When I had my motor out 2 winters ago, I went through all my lifters and found 2 that were soft-ish when I pulled the cam tower off (all the others were rock hard and didn't budge) and figured I'd found the culprits and replaced them. First restart - still noisy.
Out of the blue this past spring - they stopped making noise on cold starts and haven't made noise since. *shrug*

I have a buddy who works at an enigne machine shop. He always told me that if you can squeeze it and it is soft it is probably not good.
Just Jim said, when they are full of oil they should act as if they are solid. If they are not holding the oil, then there is an issue.
