Rear crunching noise

I have an 89 951 that makes a crunchy noise every so often when I go over a bump. It is coming from the rt rear. It also happens some times when I start moving forward.
I put it up in the air and pried around a little. I do have a little 1/4 inch of play where the half shaft enters the differential.
Also when using a pry bar, I can move the differential side to side about an inch.
Any ideas?

First thing I would do is take the half shaft off and see if it is dry and if you have bad ball bearings, check the bearing cage. If the bearing get dry or damaged they will grind. After you clean and re-grease (if you do one side you should do the other) and still have the noise check the wheel bearings. Repacking the half shafts is not hard and they usually need it anyway.

If the transaxle moves an inch side to side i would suspect a broken transmission mount. The mount is essentially two pieces of metal mated together with rubber and they do fail do to age, oil contamination or hard use.

I can only move it side to side with a pry bar.
I can' hardly move it at all by hand.

If the ball bearings were bad in the cv or dry, wouldn't the grinding noise be there all the time?
It only happens now and then.

The noise will not always be there all the time or not in my case. On an S2 I raced years ago I just heard a grinding noise off and on. I then got next to a building (garages at Texas Motor Speedway) where it would echo back to me to try and figure out the problem and where it was coming from. The CV's would only grind under hard exceleration or quick turns. So it was just under a certain load I could hear it. After I took them off they were pretty darn dry but not trashed luckly. May not be your issue but this is what came to mind when I read part of your problem.

Thanks for your reply. My car only does it when I start out in first gear or go over bumps.

Yeah I thought of that myself.
I looked around for him but he must have a great hiding place.
