So.....this picture brings up an idea!!

You could take a 4x4 transfer case and mount it like the transfer case in the Tesla picture above. Just using 1 electric motor instead of two.

The ideal set up might be an old Jeep or Land Rover case that used the offset rear axle (front and rear Diffs are inline with each other and the input is offset)

You could disable the low range and chuck out the extra set of gears to save weight. Then the whole unit could be mounted at the rear.

I guess the big question would be if those units could handle the rpm required?!

You could use a divorced transfer case. This will have a universal yoke on the input and tail shafts. The one issue I see with using a 4x4 style case, is that the ones capable of handling the motor torque, will not have an internal differential. This would make handling a bit tricky.
