2-3 Exhaust Manifold Removal
My 2-3 exhaust manifold is cracked. My 1-4 is in good shape and I'd rather not disturb it if possible.
Couple of quick questions on removal / installation -
Can you remove the 2-3 without removing the 1-4 ?
Can you remove the 2-3 without removing the exhaust studs ?
Does the 2-3 come out from the top or the bottom ?
Thanks,
brrgrr

2-3 Exhaust Header Removal
1. No, Both pieces have to come out to get 2-3 out.
2. No, if head is not removed, stud removal is the only way to wrestle those headers out.
3. Top, at least that is the only way I could get them out and back in.
I had alot of trouble getting the flanges to line-up to reinstall the studs. Needless to say this is a tough job atleast it was for me.

pretty sure
Just did it. I did not remove cam tower when I removed. Ended up pulling tower and head. Just saying it is real tight on 951.

I have semi solid engine mounts which lower the engine by 1/4 inch, and there is plenty of clearance to install/remove the headers with studs/head/cam box in place. I have done it about 10 times in the last 3 days. It's tight for me down around the frame rail, but that's why I mentioned the engine mounts.

This is exactly why I made the post - I did a search prior to posting and there is a wide range of opinion - everything from: "You must remove the studs" to "Just jack up the motor - they come right out"
I would like to leave the studs alone if possible. I'll try unbolting the motor mounts, raising the engine and removing the manifolds without removing the studs. I'll report back on the findings.

Just to complete the loop - I loosened all of the nuts, moved the 1-4 out as far as possible and had to remove 1 stud on the #3 cylinder - at that point the 2-3 came out the top with just a wiggle here and there. Not too bad. The double nut method worked very well on removing the stud.
