Default Before I bite , Can I chew ?

I have been lurking here for years with the intention of starting my project sooner then later. I currently have the funds to begin and have found myself with the overwhelming fear of failure.
I was about to purchase the maxi kit for proper belt tension from Arnnworx and was all but told to consider the less precise cheaper tool kit . I am at approx three thousand in parts with my wish list for the front end reseal, timing belt, water-pump, brakes and shocks / struts.
I figure this is a good place to start but I have jitters as I am much more experienced drinking beer then turning wrenches on what I hope to be my daily driver.
Anyone want to go over my list and critique my choices or help me add to them ? Anyone in the grater Houston " Richmond Tx " area wanna stop by , have a beer and assist with my plan of attack ? Thanks in advance, John

Do a couple of the small things first and gain a little confidence. Spend some time reviewing Clarks Garage and possibly the factory manual (commonly available on disk) to understand the process of handling the belt project.

Have you been driving your car for a while or is this a new project?

Save yourself the $250 and forgo the KLA monoball mounts...

IF you want new strut mounts, keep an eye open for an adjustable set from Racers edge, Lindsey Racing, Ground COntrol or one of many other sources... any of which result in fewer issues than the KLA mounts...

Just my 2C..

AND If I werent half the country away I would be more than happy to jump in and help... sounds like a nice Saturday of wrenching!

Good luck to you John. Sometimes I get calls like yours and after about 3 or 4 minutes of happy chatty talk, I suddenly remember its not "helping" if I help someone get in over their head. I guess I'm getting cautious in my old age. Take care...Bruce

Hello John, There are some great video's on You Tube by vsvenson covering the Porsche 951 Water Pump, Cam and Balance Belt change out with tensioning, Wheel Bearing Change, Brakes, Front Engine Reseal, etc., etc.. Check out the link below for a copy of the Work Shop Manual.

Cheers,

Disaster, That is the plan. Have been reviewing for some time now. Question is how much have I retained ? Thanks, look forward to posting with my progress.

Car has been sitting since 09. Have been starting her up on occasion.
I parked her shortly after having the clutch replaced, a/c compressor replaced. Spent a pretty penny doing those things and the a/c went out / and alternator belt broke. Knew I was going to be in for new suspension, brakes, and a couple of leaks were obvious. After loosing my (%$ in the market she needed to wait for proper maintenance and repair.

My suggestion is get it into a safe running condition and drive it for a while and really see what the car needs. Most of the new-to-me used cars always throw me a curve ball when I start the shake down process. For instance my 2001 530i decided it wanted a new fan clutch, alternator, battery, wiper motor, tires, and brakes when I had been planning suspension work. YMMV.

And jump in and start working on it. Take your time to research, read, re-read, and start tearing things apart. Fortunately, cars are mechanical, so about anything can be replaced or fixed even if you mess up.

Looking into that now, Thanks ! I would like to keep the suspension from rattling my teeth out and was considering the factory mounts however they are price prohibitive. I just cant justify them. Noticed a little dry rot on the current pair and don't feel they will be quite safe?
Suppose I should ask or look into Larts site or some thing similar . I don't see myself making adjustments too often so I initially was not considering the options you provided.
I appreciate the reply and wish I had someone like you around the corner to enjoy the project with.

Thanks Bruce, I enjoyed our short conversation. I purchased your full kit this afternoon. I look forward to having a little more confidence with the tools you provide for us.

I am just beginning to put the above plan in action. Life has been throwing my curves but feel I am financially secure enough to START now. Confidence is less then High, but I feel that it will increase with progress. Definitely time to jump in and yes it will be a Slow Project. Just so worried about a major failure such as timing belt. Research continues.
