Timing marks
Decided to open up my 86 944 turbo's engine. Put it back together but now I have to align all the timing marks. On the cam gear I have an engraved line but also another one that's painted on. Which one do I line up to the cam housing?? Also where do I check for the flywheel marks?

pictures of the cam gear?
and with the flywheel on, and the bellhousing on, the TDC mark (OT) is visible through the window of the bellhousing, and the line should align with a tab in the window...
Tab is visible, just below the square window in the bellhousing..

send to me via email to johnkoawood at aol dot com and I will be more than happy to upload it for you and tell you what you are looking at..
as far as the "window" see the picture in my previous post... it is the square hole in the bellhousing next to the hole the speed and refference sensors pass through...

I circled the hole to look through, labeled the top of the belhousing as installed on the engine, and circled the line you need to be using to align the cam when installiing it!
Hope these help (BTW, the X is to indicate where you might want to remove the paint so you don't get the marks mixed up in teh future!)

No, adjustment for timing advance retard would be up to 10 degrees or so... not 90... at 90 degrees valves would meet pistons... and we all know that is NOT a match made in heaven... too volitile a mixture to really last more than a few piston pumps!

Mine doesn't have the mark on it either. Must have been covered with black crap, or just scratched off. Not sure what happened there...
I just line up the mark at the back of the bell housing (by the starter) with the mark on the cam gear. Then do one full engine turnover by hand and make sure everything turns smoothly.
Don't forget to line up your balance shafts!!

You can find TDC another way. Take a dowel and place it in the #1 cylinder spark plug hole. Rotate the engine until it sticks out the most. This will be TDC, check the fly wheel and look for any type of mark, i.e. a scratch or paint or anything. Then check it at 180 degrees. If you still have no mark then congratulations you probably have a light weight after market fly wheel.
You will need to identify where you are for the ref sensor. If you can locate that then you should be able to locate TDC.
