Thanks a lot guys! Don't know how I'd get by without this forum. I'm surprised it's not numbered on the cap..but I should have taken better notes/pictures during the tear down.
Josh is sending my MAF kit today so I hope to have a running car soon!

It's also cast into the top of the cam tower for some reason. I guess Porsche was really worried about people knowing the firing order... or the marketing guys thought it made the motor look more exotic...

I just realized that the haynes manual is wrong which is what I used to put the wires back and is why my car won't run right. The haynes manual shows a clockwise rotation but it's actuall counter clockwise. I have been so pissed off for the past 2 weeks trying to figure out why it ran like crap after a compression check. Dam!!

Sure about that? I think the direction of rotation is clockwise...

It's definitely clockwise.
But I'm not sure that makes any difference to how you hook up the wires...if you just match the numbers indicated on the distributor diagram shown above to the cylinder numbers, it will work. IIRC the Haynes manual shows the numbering of the cylinders.

What will happen if your crank and pistons are in a certain orientation while the cam and valves are in the correct orientation to promote combustion, and your distributor rotor (because it's driven off the cam) is firing a different cylinder?

Think that through a bit.

Well that would not work - but the question is how could being wrong about the direction of rotation get you into that situation? I am pretty sure I just connected cylinder #1 (as labeled in the Haynes manual) to connector #1 on the distributor (as labeled in the Haynes manual) and so on for the others.
