what's involved for 3.0 litre turbo?

996TT's start around £20k ish here, I would think a bells and whistles 3.0 944 turbo could get close to that. The 3.0 S2 turbo is interesting and I have a space set aside in my garage incase a bargain S2/2.7 engine turns up, if it doesn't I'll save myself the money, skinned knuckles and backache .

There are a million reasons not to waste all the money on a 3 liter 951, but all of them seem entirely irrelevant on a sunny Saturday afternoon when car is running great at 20+psi, knowing the 4 cylinder motor you built with your own hands can easily pull on those late-model over-waxed trophy cars....

At 16, you might start by really learning to drive the '84 n/a -- pca driving events are a great and virtually free way to get some solid instruction on driving that very capable car. Back in 1982, Porsche sent a factory race driver to Laguna Seca to promote the brand new 944. I got to take a few "hot laps" in that car with this pro driver -- it was bone stock right down to the tires. He got around the track so ridiculously fast, I was sold forever on the 944 platform. Once you get good at driving the N/A, you could always sell it and upgrade to a 951. Going from a N/A, even a mildly chipped car will feel like a rocket ship and honestly offers more performance than most of us can truly put to full use on the track.

Driving a 3L and beating the snot out of it are two different driving styles. I drive the hell out of my car. The tune is correct, and the thing moves out like a bat outta hell. I'm by no means easy on it, and by no means a grandmother with the right pedal.
Lart, your statement is false, flat out.

Mine is not a DD but when I do get to drive it, boost is set at approx 17 on pump all day only because with the extra torque down low and in the mid range, I don't need to crank the boost past 20 as I do with my previous 2.5Ls. The important thing is to get the motor built right and with the right supporting mods and of course, a good tune. To be honest, at 1.25 bar, the thing just squat and go and is scary addictive.

I'm with Thom and Tom M'Guinn, except I wish I could've built mine with my own hands. It is ridiculuosly expensive. I'm on my fourth motor and a new tranny is on the way.
Walking from an F430 and running neck and neck with a Murcielago and a Venom 650 Viper was worth every penny. Now, with a few new friends that are going to help me wrench, and get upgrades, I'm looking for 600-650whp and similar tq. Not to mention my car weighs only 2900lbs. All newer cars are bricks. I was even shocked at the Venom 650 guy. That thing weighed about 3700lbs!

Some guys are just born that way. At 16 I made a cold air intake out of an icebox filled with ice to boost the output of my 6 cylinder Pontiac. I also made an exhaust hanger out of wood until it caught on fire -- and made my own accelerator cable out of wire I found i the garage until it sawed into the firewall and got stuck at wot. I could barely afford gas to go to and from school, so all repairs and "mods" were based on stuff I found around the house (or, technically, took off the house in the case of copper for exhaust gaskets, after learning my lesson with wood....)

Somtimes I think I should get rid of my garage and stop all this 944 stuff and just get a 996 TT with minor mods. It would have been way cheaper, but this is my hobby. So even though I get fed up with all work involved at times, in the end I don't regret having a ~600 hp 3.0l 16v engine in the garage
I built everything myself but even then I think the engine is in the $20k+ range.
EDIT: ehh probably closer to $30 when I think about it.
Oh well. In the 1000 kg race car it should even give the 700+ hp 996/997 race cars a run for the money

Dukey...if that GTR car recently showed a clean pair of heels to all those Cups and RSRs (still can't quite figure that out?)...your's will be lapping them in 5 mins!! The lure of a worked 996tt especially after all the spending that some of us have done is real. I'd prefer a Cup S but what can we do? We're too far down the road now.
