Never had this issue on a 944, but it seems like the responses are good. Also, for future reference in an emergency situation it is perfectly ok to switch the ignition off before pushing the clutch in, so you can skip the step of letting the engine bounce off the rev limiter.

And I LOL'd a little. An old friend of mine wanted to see what would happen if he shut the car off while driving down the expressway, so he flipped the key. The steering wheel lock engaged and he panicked. In his state of panic he didn't think to TURN THE DAMNED KEY BACK ON and instead coasted, wheel locked, across 4 lanes of highway and hit the center median when the expressway curved to the right and he couldn't turn the wheel.
One of those guys that makes almost 7 figures but has ZERO common sense.
Moral of the story: don't let the panic get the best of you.

Another a bit off topic story: I flipped the kill switch on my carbed sport bike once to see what would happen. As it turns out, not much drama until you flip it back on and it ignites the unburned fuel that had been collecting in the exhaust.

Interesting. Here every single car from as long as I can remember only locks steering when you pull the key out. If you just cut the ignition, the lock will not engage. 944/911/928 included.
