Default EVO 9 Turbo

Can the turbo off an EVO 9 fit on a 951 somehow? I believe its a 20g. My friend has an EVO and he's about to upgrade the turbo and he said he'll sell me his stock one real cheap. I'm pretty confident with my mig welder, but even if I have to have a shop fab me up some exhaust pieces it'll still be a cost effective upgrade. Forgive me if this question is dumb, I don't know much about turbos.

Evos use turbos that rotate counter clockwise, and they have an odd twin scroll flange. May be a bit of a pita to fit.

Probably more effort than it's worth. And I don't think those turbos are all that great either.

I ran across a new Evo10 once when I had the T04E in the 951, result wasn't pretty.

IMO the primary reason why Evo's are so fun to mod is because they come with a bulletproof IRON block. Sure it's heavy, but it also means they can take a ton of abuse. Same thing with the iconic 2JZ or RB26DETT.

From what I've seen of Evo's, nothing else about their motors are particularly noteworthy or well-engineered.

Looks like it's going to be a pain, but anything more than a k27 is way out of my budget. Some day I'll be done with school

FWIW, I wrapped up install yesterday on 2 cars... one was a 26-8.. the other was a Kokeln Stage 5.. (come to think about it, BOTH turbos were purchased for less than a K27 conversion)

While the K27 will outflow the 26-8, it would be hard pressed to beat the Kokeln Turbo!

Keep your eyes peeled, you might be able to pick up a deal, but you have to be ready to pounce when it comes available!

Also of note, was BOTH were direct bolt on... only catch on the Kokeln turbo is it is only oil cooled, so we deleted all the turbo water cooling bits (pump block off, and installed an NA reservoir...)

Please tell me one of these was your car. Hasn't yours been on blocks since the dawn of time (maybe sooner)?

don't waste your time on a turbo built for a 2.0L unless it's from a FQ360 i wouldn't bother.

From what I understand, earlier Evos run a big version of the 16g turbo. Could be the same thing with the Evo9

Tuned well on a 2.0 engine, they can make about 330-365whp with full bolt ons and cams (depending on how optimistic the dyno is )...owing much of that power to a very efficient cylinder head.

I had one off of my old 1g eclipse GSX, and put it next to a stock K26.

Not too much of a difference in size. And considering how much work it would take to install it, definitely not worth it.

Thanks guys, I'm still learning. He's able to hold 35psi all day so I figured the turbo was a big improvement.

.

His car with an exhaust and a tune made 350whp. Very cool car, but I'd still rather dump 25k+ into a 951

Again, those boost figures are also due to the cast iron block. Make a 951 engine out of cast iron and it'll be able to do the same thing.

Think of it this way: 35lbs of boost on a 951 better be making a HELLUVA lot more power than 350wrhp. Hell, even 20lbs of boost.

The 4g63 is a good engine, but its internals are nowhere near as robust as a 951. The pistons and rods, rod and main journals all look like toys compared to the 951. To get any major power, you'd have to change the internals ( at least its cheap on a mitsubishi )

Sure, there are a lot of 4g63s pushing 500-700hp. In my experience, the Porsche engine is far more reliable compared to the 4g63. It was made for midrange torque, and not really to exceed 6000rpm. It also isnt uncommon for your average upgraded 944 turbo to be making 350-400rwtq, which no one seems to discuss. I dont know about you, but I love being able to pull from 75-140 without shifting out of 5th
