Post What's my first step?

I bought my first Porsche in August, a beautiful white 1986 951. It has 107,000 miles, and runs, looks and drives like new. It is stock except Weltmeister chips and a K&N filter (I've ordered the factory filter after following one of the discussions on Rennlist). I live in Minnesota, so the car is in my shop for the winter. I plan on replacing the belts, rollers and waterpump, also going through the CV joints. I'm hoping to put in rear seat belts with shoulder harnesses for my 4 year old son. What is my best first performance step? Exhaust? Guru MAP kit? I'm really impressed with the feedback on the MAP kits and Danno's support. I would like to gain as much performance as possible with my stock turbo and without worrying about blowing head gaskets or other carnage. THANKS!!!

You should go for the cat bypass (plus rear muffler), the guru kit is great if you have a dyno on hand, otherwise a MAF is easier to tune.

Welcome to the club avainio! May I suggest you try our Chip Upgrade Kit first? I think you'll be pleasantly surprized at the performance boost over your existing set-up. This will hold you over as you consider your options. You also get a $250 discount on the MAP kits later since the same components are used in the chip-kit.

We're working up an upgrade plan for people with minimal redundancy. Going from the Stg.1 to Stg.2 kits will be easy with just the J-pipe and larger K&N filter needed. This will also continue to scale up with the GURU-364 kit easily as well...

Aye - grab up the Guru Chip Set - you'll love it. After that, you can grab the MAP kit minus the price of the chips - win/win situation. Youll get performance you can feel from this stuff - if you want to sound fast however - exhaust is the way to go.

Cool

Okay Danno - I'll bite...

What gives? New project in the works? Let me guess - something with a new wastegate, turbo, etc... that builds off the Stage II MAP kit? Not nice to tease people like that you know. Let's have some details...

Is it a fairly straightforward job to replace the chips? This looks like a very nice way to add performance in several steps, I would definitely want to upgrade to the MAP kit in the future. I can't believe how fast this car is already, just thinking about it is making me cross off calendar days until spring.
I've been following the discussions since I bought the car (and became a card carrying Rennlist member 2 days later), and I'm amazed at the knowledge and willingness to share it on these forums. I'm actually looking forward to changing my timing belts. THANKS AGAIN!
Arne.
