Default balance shaft cover sealant?

I am planning on fixing the leak on my lower balance shaft tomorrow. I have all of the parts, and was figuring on going to the local auto parts store today to pick up a tube of Loctite 574, the recommended sealant when resealing the cover. They do not carry it. Are there any other sealants that can be used? They have the Permatex high-temp red RTV silicone gasket maker. Would this work, or should I put the project off until I can find 574?

I would wait until you can find 574.

You can order it through McMaster Carr. They have a warehouse in NJ and it should arrive tomorrow if you order by 3 or 4pm EST if shipping to you in PA. Also may want to check if you have a NAPA by you, i think they carry 574 also.

The 574 is the recommended sealant but I've used "Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker" on a couple of engine rebuilds, in place of the 574, without any problems.

What also works well is the sealant they sell at porsche. I ordered two tubes of the stuff to seal the engine case ( no gasket, scary stuff ) and then used it for the rest of the engine. No leaks. I plan to use it on the 951 as well. It is about $53 per tube, one should be enough.

I found the 574, and started the project yesterday. Have the rear belt cover off, power steering bracket, and working on the headers. It is a lot of work.

the rear of my lower balance shaft housing is leaking. It is coming from the end cap at the rear of the cover where the inner o-ring is located. from my understanding the o-ring shrinks and gets hard from it close location to the exhaust manifold, and just age. It is not an easy job.

That's exactly what happens the o ring shrinks causing an oil leak, a temp fix if you have to drive is clean the area real well and coat the out side in the recessed area with high temp sil. this is only temporary . ( this is just if you have to drive her )
