Well,if what you mean is an exhaust system that doesn't have a cat or muffler,I can tell you that it's way to loud for street use and it will double up as a flame thrower. I have a 3" stainless exhaust (without the cat) but I installed a Ultra Flow muffler to quiet it down with a little success and yet flames still come out above 6000rpm.If cop attention is not a problem in your area than you might get away with it.If your looking for decent normal to quiet highway driving then forget the straight through system (keep a muffler).

I built a 3.0" straight pipe exhaust from the turbo downpipe on back last year. Got a ticket within 24-hours...

How would it be with a high flow 3" cat and no muffler? I need a cat for inspection I know but I am not sure if I must have a muffler.

Why is it that guys with Harleys can run straight pipes and be loud as hell but not get a ticket
Soon as you want to open your car up you get fined!

Harleys and other motorcycles are classified as low emissions vehicles... hence they don't need a cat and the like... technically, they are still breaking the noise rule (98 db in CA - or is it 89 dB?)

"Is that like Harley loud with cat and straight pipe?"

No, make that like an-entire-pack-of-Hell's-Angels LOUD !!! When I opened it up on the freeway behind some Harleys, they all looked over their shoulders with a startled look and pulled over! My roommate said she could hear me coming home for over 5 minutes before I arrived. My neighbors called the cops every single time I came home after 2am. I got booted from Laguna Seca for being too loud. Tracks that didn't have noise regulations quickly implemented them after I arrived. I take off my ear-plugs when I get to the shooting range because it's eerily quiet. I've replaced all the glass in my car, including the light-bulbs with Lexan because they keep on shattering...

I didn't think mine was too loud with a straight exaust from the turbo back inside the cabin but I did get followed by cops once, and got a verbal warning (after I pulled onto my parent's driveway). Added a muffler soon after that. It's nothing like a normally aspirated engine without a cat or muffler.

hahahaha. i didnt think it was gonna be that loud. although there arent any noise regulations in pennsylvania that im aware of, i guess i should keep a muffler on there. my friend runs straight pipes on his type r civic, its not too obnoxiously loud, just kinda raspy. but that is like a 1.8 liter N/A Honda engine and not a turbocharged porsche.

I would think the cat would work better than a muffler to keep it quiet since it is probably more restrictive.

Yeah, I think the cat cuts out more noise than the muffler too. It works further up the pipe where the velocity is higher, the heat and exhaust energy is higher, so any damping here would have a greater effect... and restriction...

I bought a 2 1/2" piece of stainless pipe for $40 and had a friend weld it in for a case of beer. The resone I did this is because the cat was vibrating and making funny noises on startup and I had to get rid of it anyways. It sounds great (not too loud not too quiet) and just howls when you get up on boost. If I ever have to pass emissions though, I may have a problem...

The difference between (a little more power and the sound is awsome!) the a with-cat exhaust and a without-cat exhaust is enough to make it worth it if you can get your hands on a method of passing emissions.

Yes! A straight pipe is deafening, as we started up my car with the catback off, and holly **** was it loud! Although the turbo shuts things up a fair bit. My buddy's '80 firebird with just the headers sounded like a top fuel dragster!!
