Worn lifter bores can also make for a noisy top end. I had to replace a head on an S because two bores were so worn the oil wasn't getting pumped into the lifters. It didn't make much difference powerwise, but it was worth the quiet!

However, I havent heard of many other cases where worn bores were the problem.

Well thanks to everyone's help, I found the offending lifter. Broom handle was not necessary to collapse the lifter. I could push it with my finger. I did check the rest so I should only need one. It took roughly 2.5 hours to get there for my first time. That included time to make a "special tool" to reach the allen bolts inside the cam cover. Now I am just waiting for my part to come in. Should be about 1.5 hours to put her back together.

Well I started to put everything back together last night. Last thing to do was put the fuel rail back in and I noticed the plastic end on injector #1 was cracked. SO I waited till this morning and picked up a seal kit for the injector. Fixed the injector after work and finished the car. Big Moment! Start the car. It started. I let it idle a couple of minutes and then gently revved it. Clacking sound is still there <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

So I guess I am towing it into the shop tomorrow

For info:
Hydraulic lifter $86 Cdn
Valve cover gasket $18 Cdn
Injector seal kit $5 Cdn

Tomorrows shop bill $$$$ Cdn

Late last year, the wastegate on my 951 failed. Some of the internals came unscrewed and were rattling around in the exhuast pipe. Before it came apart completely, I noticed metallic tapping sounds and rattling that was not very consistent with the rpms. This could have been from a past life of being shimmed, but I'm not sure. If it's not the motor, check the wastegate. Good luck.

Well the machanic diagnosed it as a connecting rod problem. I started a new thread on what's the easiest way to take a look and fix.
