I assume you're referring to the distance the speed sensor should be away from the flywheel? Factory spec is .8mm +/- .3mm.

ive just battled this for 3 days trying to get car to start. use a dime which is 1.2 and call it a day. my flywheel ate 2 sensors trying to set the height. .8 is the correct distance. and if u have to buy a sensor get the bmw one its half the price. wish someone had told me last week.

Using the speed sensor bore, you need to find the high point on the tooth of the starter ring. An do not use the Ref sensor bore because it is a set screw on the flywheel ie a single point.

It is important, ONLY use the speed sensor bore to set the height to 0.8mm using a glued on washer. I rock the crank shaft back and forth to set the high point on a starter tooth. Procedure:

No, not the gap. I know the 0.8 mm for the speed sensor is what I want. I just replaced the clutch, flywheel, etc and found that to get the correct 0.8 mm gap I need a spacer under the speed sensor. I don't remember one coming out but it is possible it hit the floor and disappeared.
With a washer under the speed sensor I can get the gaps for both speed and reference sensors correct at 0.8 mm and apparently some of our vehicles came with this spacer.
Mine has the reference sensor shield tube.
The spacer looks like a washer with a bolt hole that aligns with the hold down bolt for the sensor.
I have a sensor shim washer ordered from ebay but could easily just make one as I am shut down on putting anything else back together.
The reason I asked the question is so I could use a temporary washer of the same thickness, set the gaps, continue putting the car back together and install the spacer/washer when it gets here.
Thanks.

reno808, too funny..., but accurate.

I just searched and found where it should be 2mm which puts both sensors gapped correctly.
