Default forged internals ?.

I see people selling early engines claiming the 220 bhp cars benefit from forged cranks, rods and pistons and the later cars make do with cast, my thoughts are it's only the forged rods that were replaced, anyone have any definitive info and if I'm right when were the cast rods fitted.

Early na's had RARST forged rods so it did every 951 from 86-89.

All Crankshafts in the 944-968 series were forged.

Thanks guys, BS on everything but the rods then, I think the early 220 turbo discharge pipe was single skin hence larger internal bore, anything else spring to mind better on the early engine ?.

Either Oddjob or Brian Broderick posted some info on 89 Turbos not having the RARST rods.

The discharge pipe on my 220 car is double walled.

From what I have found, the factory transitioned from forged rods to cast rods during MY89. I have seen late production MY89 M44/52 engines w/ cast rods. Early 89s have forged rods. I do not know by what serial/VIN number the transition was made. I think most will say that MY90+ RoW engines all used cast rods. PET also matches this.

I recall some others also commenting on having torn down mid to late production 89 motors and have found cast rods.

Came up in this thread, posts #20-#30. Interesting comment from Chris Cervelli about the same cast rods being used on 968 Turbo RS motors...
