Post Wanted: opinions on upgraded MAF

If there's one thing this list has, it's opinions! Educated and well experienced at that, I have to say...
Anyway, I've searched through the archives, but haven't been able to find anything very concise about the benefits of upgrading the stock MAF on a Turbo (89) to a hot wire system. I've heard everything from "don't bother until you've upgraded everything else" to "an easy 90hp bolt on". Some more consistent info I've heard is better throttle response and slight improvement in lag. Anybody care to share their experiences (again)? <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

ONE argument is that upgrading to a MAF will not produce any hp gain, theoretically. When the various companies perform dyno runs with them, it is at 18lbs of boost. They also say that, upgrading to a MAF will generally result in 2 added psi of boost. (this is how they can claim a hp increase)

IMHO is disagree with this theory for several reasons. The first is that a J pipe and MAF is a more efficient use of intake piping than the countless # of 90 degree bends in the oe tract. Second, Diameter. You are cramming Much more air into the inlet, in a shorter period of time (this is why I think there is a 2psi increase). Volume makes no difference in this case, because Air is an endless supply. And Thirdly, if you can tune your MAF to a better A/F ratio than the AFM, you will see a deffinate power increase.

I think that if you are running a k26/8 or larger turbo, you will see more of a benifit than a k26/6. The 26/6 cannot flow enough air as it is.

I also think that the PRO FLOW ($600) is a GREAT MAF. I will prove this in the next week or so with some real proof! I dont Think the PRO FLOW is superior, but it is deffinately MUCH BETTER in some aspects! (not just the price) I will spill soon

I just emailed MP and asked about the MAF they sell (the pro-flow) and he said he has the kit for $675.. I thought it was less, so I emailed back and asked.. also asked about everything included and dificulty of install.. we'll see what he says.. (he emailed very quickly back the first time) .. maybe he's got some dyno charts to show any gains..

lukesilver, perhaps you can give some insight on the install dificulty..?

Got a reply.. it seems the supplier for MP went up and as of 1/1/02 the new price is $675.. so I guess lukesilver got better deal than is to be gotten now.

per the email..

"The system is compete, maf, wiring harness, air filter, calibration computer. "

not sure which computer they are using...

Thanks for the input, guys. Does anybody have first hand experience installing the Pro Flow system? I couldn't find any references to Porsche applications on their web site. Seems like you get a lot for the money at that price, assuming the computer and all is sorted out properly.

Installation of a Pro Flow will go the same as any other MAF. An A/F meter is not supplied, so there goes the hard part. The "computer" is prewired into the MAF sensor. It comes with pretty detailed instructions. O and BTW, the sensor is closet to the Filter (as far away from the turbo as possible).

Im telling you guys! Go pick them up before they go up to $775! and then 875.........

Luke,

I'm waiting to hear about your PRO FLOW you hype so much. So, is it user adjustable for boost levels, or do you run a fixed boost level? THe kit we sell may cost more, but its back for the life of the buyer, its completley user tuneable, and can be run from anywhere from waistegate boost to 20+ psi safely.

Sure we have "*****" but if that scares people away, then I'm amazed you have a computer to even get on this board.

The SFR MAF kit never needs to be sent back to be RE CALIBRATED for a higher boost setting, is chip independant, and allows the greates amount of fine tuning vs any kit out there.

For instance, using the same exact electronics I bought with my level three MAF three years ago, before I was a "tuner" I was able to go from a stock motor with a stock turbo, stock waistgate, to a full blown 2.82 liter, after market turbo and waistagate. I went from 285hp at the wheels to 400+ at the wheels...using that maf kit, simply by adjusting those wonderfull ***** and fine tuning the fuel delivery with it.

I say, you get what you pay for...if your bargain hunting, expect a bargain...if your seriously looking for the best in performance and backing...then you go to SFR :-)

Take Care all!

hey john, from your post it looks like you feel threatened of the hype that luke is putting out. what we really want to know is the basis for your cost of the maf. now you say it this wonderful thing but all i see are two extra ***** than that of the pro flo units. i mean really $1500 vice $675 you do the math, now i only say this because i dont have a turbo car (yet ) and all i can expect is about 15hp gain and thats pushing it so i can see the pro flo units meeting my needs perfectly.
its just like other manufacturers of performace stuff for hondas,chevy,ford,etc.. they have flooded the aftermarket with these parts that you could turn in a coke bottle to purchase one of there products but now we get to the porsches, bmw, mercedes. every euro tuner out there thinks there **** dont stink and damn proud of this **** that they just ****, i mean $2400 for a pair of cams for mercedes 380se just to get 15 extra horses thats about the queerest thing i have seen to date, its a freaken cam and no i didnt get them ,hell for $2400 i'll just get a damn hemi put in the car (its the same brand now)

and by the way what is so special about ya'lls inter cooler pipes that they need to be priced starting at $350 hell its just tubing bent on a mandrel bender. i'm getting one pipe bent this weekend for $30 and yes its seemless stainless 2.5in and not from a friend either. nipples will be installed by me at no charge.

so you say you get what you pay for yes in a sense you do but research help keep the cost down, and by getting my bent pipe from a muffler shop, although might not be for the intake side will be sufficient for my standards and will save me probably $100 or so, and if i can get a maf that works just like the ones our elustrious euro tuners can provide for half the price i wont hesitate to do more research in order to get it.

and lastly i want to apologize to you john for venting on you, you guys are only doing what the market dictates (which sucks), but thats the way the cookie crumbles, i guess.

John, any chance you can give us a good price for the MAF kit? $1499 is a bit mighty high for my price budget, and considering that I cannot use the piping and don't need a third a/f meter on my dash.

Not knowing all the latest maf brands and prices I can remember gathering all the info and prices a few years ago and after installing chips the maf was to add a extra 10 to 15 hp and how much does one want to pay for 10 or 15 hp?

If you want pipes made at the muffler shop for 30 bucks...so be it...if you want a non tuneable maf kit that runs a preset boost level...no matter the difference in your engine from the engine they used to tune the master unit...then so be it...

I just stated the facts of the system...ours being totaly independant of your boost wants, and engine size...anything you decide to do with your engine or exhaust with our kit is just a few **** away from being tuned. You cannot do this with a oreset unit...its that simple. If your car has less mileage you may get more boost spike...blow a gasket...if your car has sloppy rings, you'll be a roach...with our kit, no matter tyhe condition of your engine...just tune it :-)

as for our pipes...we do not have them bent from aluminized 5lb PIPE stock at the mufflet shop...we make ours from polished SS TUBE very lightweight...the bends are then welde into place... so again, if your bargain hunting, expect what your paying for...but I doubt...and will give anyone a 20 dollar bill if they can prove they had a set of pipes built at their local muffler that are the same as ours, in material weight weld and finish and incudes the turned in grip rings one each end as our does for 30 bucks.

I know it won't happen.

We build the finest...by hand ...each order. In the tradition of the Porsche!

that turned ring is called a bead, and i can do that at the hanger for nothing.

i wasnt questioning your quality of the product. i was just questioning your pride of the product. as far as the muffler shop doing mine, it is 18ga seemless stainless with no welding them together. but its not polished, dont want it anyway.

anyway, have a nice day, it looks like a beutiful day here and im sure its that way in cali.
