Post 86 vs 87 suspension and offset question

I have purchased a set of 87 hubs, spindles and brakes for my 86 turbo. The main reason is to use late offset wheels. In looking at the archives it is now unclear if the offset change is accomplished with the hubs and spindles or if the control arm was responsible for the offset change or both. If I change the front to 87 offset do I need to change more than the spindle/hub, control arms and tierods? Can I use my 86 arms and 87 spindle/hub to get the offset change?

thanks

John

The change in offset was due to the longer control arms. So you're choices are:

A. Hubs and Spacers per <a href="http://members.rennlist.com/951_racerx/WheelsFAQ-spacers.html" target="_blank">Danno</a>. You can keep your entire '86 setup.

B. 87+ control arms, spindles, hubs and tie rod ends.

Also for the rear:

C. 87+ semi-trailing arms, hubs w/bearings, brake rotors, brake calipers

Dano's right, If you update the front you should do the rear.

If you are just trying to get more track you can use the 87 hubs and spindles and go with spacers and studs.

My car has the 87 setup on 86 arms. I ended up having the Wheelsoure build 2 sets of their 3 pc forged wheels in 18 x 11 with 6.5" backspace on all 8. I use a 1/4" spacer in the rear. The track is now 71" front and 72" rear. Widebody track only car.

I recently did the update with the hubs, spindles, rotors, and control arms and tie rod ends up front and the hubs and and rotors at the rear. That's what was required to do mine. I was getting rubbing on the inner fender on the driver's side before changing out the suspension, no rubbing anywhere now.

My car came with late offset wheels on the early offset suspension. You can see the differences here:
Early offset:

<a href="http://pages.prodigy.net/need4speed/Dscn0906a.jpg" target="_blank">http://pages.prodigy.net/need4speed/Dscn0906a.jpg</a>

Late offset in these first 3 images:

I didn't need to do the trailing arms in the rear to get the offset on mine....nor did I need to swap brake calipers.

Cheers!

Thanks guys,
That answers some of my questions. Here is my plan: use 87 spindles and hubs, get 87 control arms, replace outer tierod with 87 part. In rear use spacers and longer studs. Can I use 86 calipers in the front? anything else I am forgetting?

thanks

I have the 86 calipers up front and in the rear with mine John. No rubbing or other issues with them.

I got the whole tierods when I changed mine (may not be required but I got some good ones used) and I was told by Chris White that you'll need the 87 rotors as well because of the change in the spindle/hubs and control arm length for ABS. Also the wheel bearings are setup different on the 87+ cars and don't require removal of any wheel bearings to change rotors at the track or wherever. Save you some time doing brake work!

Don't forget wheel bearings. I changed all of my wheel bearings while I was in the process. 2 inner and 2 outer for the front. I'd just get new ones and install them for what they cost. I think $40 for all 4 from Paragon. I did the rear ones at the same time since you basically have to there and those are more expensive, but since you aren't doing those, it shouldn't be a big deal.

I talked with Chris White who has done this to every 86 he's owned and he loves it and is not a fan of spacers and studs if you drive the car hard (my reason for going ahead and doing the rear as well). His advice was great and it worked superb for me! Three cheers for Chris!!!!

Cheers!
