Since my transmission recently broke, I have been calling around looking for an '89 Turbo S trans and limited slip, but what is the real difference between the S and Non-S?

The 88 951 S got a new gearbox (016R AOR) then used on the later models.
Besides the 40% LSD on the new gearbox it is also oilcooled and has reinforced (blasted) first and second gears. The LSD is also reinforced.

That's the trans to get, but $$$ if you can find one. There were only 7000 cars produced world-wide w/ this transmission and aprox. 2000 imported into US (according to the Kevin Gross FAQ). People who have S cars like to keep them running so parts cars are rare. Saw one for sale a few months ago. I think it was Tony Garcia selling one for $2100. Ouch dude. . .

The 968 six speed is a great performance upgrade for accelleration with its close ratio gears. You will loose top end speed as the 951 fifth gear is taller than the 968's sixth gear.
You also will loose the speedometer. The 951 has a speed sensor on the trans case, but the 968 gets its speed signal from the abs sensor. I have seen 968 six speeds in 951's, but all of them have no speedometers.

Yeah, in fact the famous Steve "R" (Russakov) uses a 968 trans in his race car and has a gear/RPM/speed lookup taped to his dash so he can tell what speed he's at on the track. Kinda a lot more to think about than I'd like while racing, but I can see where a 6 speed would help on track, not all that great a transd for a driver - expensive and no speedo. I suppose with enough money one could get the speedo back. I have to say I am real happy with the 5 speed.

This thread has brought up a (probably) silly question on my part. What are the transmission/differential types that are possible if you've got the external oil cooler.
In otherwords, I've got the cooler on my transmission, but I always assumed it was the original tranny which based on the car's option codes was a non-lsd. This is a '88 non-S.

Russ,
not silly question at all.You got excately the same car as i have, a '88 non S 951.Into my knowledge all '87-'88 (non S 951) do not have trans cooler.Factory used it on '86 models and again from '88 S 951 till the end of 951 production at '91.First year trans (cooled) was available both with LSD and non LSD versions. All the rest cooled transmissions were with LSD.
Wonder how it is possible you got the cooler....

I assume by transmission oil cooler were talking about the finned loops of tubing on the passenger side of the transmission? That's what I've got. Maybe the cooler is something else? If not, how could I tell if I have lsd or not?
