Fixed my overheating issue on my recently purchased 87 951 drove it today and noticed a few things. One being a wheel bearing noise. I can feel it in the steering wheel which leads me to believe its the front. When i turn right it gets worse which makes me think LF but sometimes it switches and i turn left and it gets worse. What kind of front wheel bearings does an 87 951 have, the inner and outers like an 86 or is it a hub design??

An easy way to check which one is finished is take the dust caps off and look at the grease colour. if it's warn out it'll look dirty dark grey, if it's good it would look blue.
i bought 2 so i could replace both but noticed 1 was still in good condition so replaced only 1. not a hard task IMO go on youtube and search 944 front wheel bearing replacement and there's a video explaining how to replace it.

Jack the wheel up, grab at 6 & 12, and apply force. If it moves any more than a barely perceptible amount then it's too loose and needs to be tighten. I'd then remove the outer bearing and check it. If the grease is still in good shape and you don't see any discoloration on the rollers it's probably fine.
If you do replace, change them both while you're in there.
Don't worry, 1 issue per week of ownership if pretty good in the 951 world. ;-)

Ok so pulled apart LF yesterday found bearings to never have been touched. Outer bearing was bad. Parts coming in today. Replacing inner and outers and grease seals. Should do the trick.
