For those that have drag raced your 951
Just wondering what are stock times for a 86' 951, also what about with stage 2 chips installed?
Just curious because I will probably never bring my car to the drags, I mostly autocross.
I pick up my 86' 951 this weekend, I can hardly wait! I already had stage 2 chips installed and I figured the next upgrade after that is the exhaust. The car already has a K&N drop in filter. Whats my next logical performance upgrade? map/maf?

Forgive me for not being knowledgable yet, but a test pipe is a cat bypass pipe right? I was planning on doing the entire exhaust system from turbo to tail pipe with 3 inch. So I think that would cover the test pipe

How come the factory and road test results indicate a 13.9 sec 1/4 mile and a 5.1 0-60mph for a stock 1986 951??? And we see keep on seeing 15 sec 1/4 miles posted by people?

Most people don't abuse their cars by launching like the magazines do to get the numbers. Judging from the 102+mph trap speeds, I'll bet all the launches are 1500rpm clutch slips, floor it, lag, and go.
As for hard launches, I used to launch at 5500rpm, drop the clutch, wheelspin stops around 3300rpm so boost is built for a good launch, then really fast power shift through the gears. Unfortunately, I went through 3 sets of CV joints (stock), as well as a tranny. 1st and 2nd gear both chipped a tooth.

Road & Track's original road test of the '86 Turbo shows a 6.0-sec. 0-60 time and a quarter-mile of 14.6 @ 97.5 mph. I found that in an issue that compared it to the Corvette (5.8 and 14.4 @ 96.0) and RX-7 Turbo (6.6 and 15.2 @ 92.5). The 944's trap speed vs the Corvette's is really impressive!

The best launch I've had happened to be on a Gtech run. Requires about 4k rpm then half engage the clutch to get the car moving, then slowly let it out to keep the car from bogging. It can't be good for the clutch, but it's great for launches. Anything more will be wheelspin and anything less will involve bogging. That G-tech run was 4.8 0-60 and 13.2 at 112mph. (Gtech mph figures are inflated by 3 or 4 mph)
On contrast, I tried an actual dragstrip once. And try as I did, I could not get the same launch. I think the best time was about 14.8 at 96mph. Always had a bog. Others too have tried and failed to get decent times a the drag strip.
Why? you ask?
I love our all purpose car. It hauls groceries, golf clubs, lumber, stuff to the dump, Autocrosses, Time Trials, 1/4 mile (if you dare), and someday a Silverstate high speed ralley. Oh, and it gets me to work too!
Because someone will ask, here's my list..
DanD 86 951 *2
K&N cone intake, HR MAF Stage I (upgraded to III), custom hard pipes, ARC II fuel controller, ARM1 air/fuel meter, AutoThority Stage II chips, APEXi AVC-R electronic boost controller, shimmed wastegate, free flowing PowerEffect adjustable muffler. Autopower rollbar, 400# front Koni adjustable shocks, 300# rear(Hal/QA1) + 25.5mm torsion bars, , aggressive track alignment.
2nd car, Stock so far...

12.9...........I went through 2 trannys 2 torque tubes and lots of CV's, joints, and bolts. Lots of practice is needed to do it right on these cars, and lots of $$$. I dont remenber the trap speed, but this car was very modified.

Same here, in my quest for fast 1/4-mile times, I went through tires, wheel-bearings, CV-joints, torque-tube bearings, clutch, etc. in less than one year! Best I got was a 13.2sec@1xxmph. Don't recall what the MPH was exactly, but I had to shift into fourth for a couple of seconds. After adding up the totals, I realized that roadracing on real racetracks would cost less and give a whole lot more fun. I don't think the Porsche factory teams ever did any drag-racing???

13.40@107 huntley stage 2 chips manual boost controller sfr catcack and a K&N 3 bar fixed regulator. 86 951 with 137k on the clock. VP C-12 race gas and bald tires! Keep in mind I drag race alot (even though thats not what this car is for!)

I've run a 14.6 @ 102.7 (G-tech) in my turbo S- I only tried twice, as my car wasn't in the best condition AND, I did a slightly soft launch w/lift throttle shifts that were relatively slow- I KNOW I could have lost several more tenths if I'd tried hard- anyway, the Turbo S was always quoted (by Porsche) to run a 13.5, but never did- the fastest you'll ever see tested was a 13.9 (C&D) and THAT was w/the shorter FD which took them half way through 4th as opposed to barely into, like Danno said. Even so, that gearing still didn't help 0-60 (5.5) as the shift to third came right BEFORE 60. Anyway, common times for a BRAND NEW Turbo S is 14.2 @ ~101. A well broken in one could possibly hit ~13.9 or so, but to hit a 13.5 would be REALLY stretching it- of course, w/aftermarket chips, etc (and a bottomless wallet), the sky's the limit. One of the best I've heard of is Kurt's JM built turbo charged 3.1L 968 enigne- he's gone well into the 130's w/horrible launches (he's only messsed w/it a few times)- he's posts on this list every now and then- he's also in the SCC contest- I've meant to e-mail him to find out how that's going- it's an impressive car- 968 trans, etc- I think it's an '86...

ive run 14.8 at 97 mph,at 12 psi and the minor stuff listed below, but i just switched from a mbc to ball valve boost controller and i get full boost much sooner. friday night i will have a better time (i hope), still at 12-13 psi. i agree about the launch, i take it easy. to get factory numbers you must fry the clutch.
