I think there have been many american cars designed for drag racing, especially the muscle cars of the 70s, and today's mustang is another car that is probably designed for this to some extent. So-so handling and a big 8 = drag car.
Porsche doesn't build cars with these characteristics, because drag racing is mostly an american phenomenon. Plus, those who can afford a new one probably are past the drag racing stage. How many drag strips are there in Europe? I have no idea, but I've sure never heard of one.
In any event, I'm not going to be beating up my 16 year old drive train to try to impress some kid, I'm not rich enough. I save my kicks for third-gear roll-ons, corners and the track. That's where these cars excel, and it doesn't beat them up as much.

I ran 13.91@104.9 mph with my 1986 951. The mods are a chip and a boost controller adjusted at about 16 PSI. Using a G-Tech Pro my best 0-60 mph run has been 5.56 seconds.
When I purchased the car I really liked to street race on standing starts. When properly launched (clutch slip at about 4000 RPM), the 951 can really surprise AWD cars like modified Eclipses or WRXs. I once raced against a really fast Talon TSI AWD (Big 16G @ 18 PSI, exhaust, chip, race gas) and I beat it on a standing start. The problem is the maintenance cost of that kind of race (I had to change all four CV joints in less than two months), so now I really rarely race on standing starts. If I had the money to pay for all the repairs I would... But for now I don't. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

badcoupe- thats a sweet 60' time. i was going to go racing on fri. but it fell through. anyone live near reading pa? i would love to race a fellow p-car. its all about good fun!

True, but those improve upon the original purpose of the car. You CAN drag a 951 but the people who have aren't any more because it breaks expensive things.
This topic was touched on a while ago and the consensus was that it's really stupid to spend the premium part $$ on 951s when you can make so many other cars faster for a fraction of the money. They're easier to work on too...
Kuma, beating Supra TTs with a Porsche is satisfying but beating a Supra TT with a Merkur XR4TI that costs less than his mods ALONE is even better.
