Speaker Replacement - Turbo S
Does anyone have the model numbers for a complete set of 10 aftermarket speakers for the Turbo S? I'm going to replace my stockers soon in the hopes of getting some better sound.
I'd like a complete set that replace the stock ones perfectly, no cutting or fitment problems. I'm leaning towards Blaupunkt since I recently installed a Blaupunkt CD, and I only want to spend a few hundred bucks for all of them (or less). TIA

From what I remember, the fronts have a 5 1/4" woofer, 4" midrange and1/2" tweeter. The rears are b/w a 6 1/2 and 8" woofer and 4" midrange.
I brought these over to a high end car stereo shop and they pretty much gave me the sizes. They also stated that there wasn't going to be a direct bolt on speaker to replace the stock units other than maybe the 5 1/4" up front and the tweeter. Even then, they may still had to 'modify' some brackets or the plastic housing that holds the speakers. The rears were just really odd. The owner gave me a suggestion to just replace the old RENO BLAU unit and SP80 amp. He promised it would make a HUGE difference. And, that the 10 speaker system in the 88 S and 89 cars were pretty good as long as you got CLEAN signals.
So I bought a Pioneer DEH-9300. I'm not a car stereo kind of person as this was my first aftermarket car stereo purchase. I changed out the head unit and the sound blew me away! and these are the stock speakers!
All I did (from the head unit) was change the time alignment, eq levels and crossovers for the front and rears! This head unit, although kinda too wild due to its organic graphics, is really a sweet unit. i believe it was replaced by the 9400 now.
I didn't trust the stereo guy when he told me that the head unit would change everything. But I do now. Just b/c of that, I bought an alpine v12 mono amp to drive an 8" subwoofer in a custom enclosure that went in the rear cubby hole. After adding the sub, the head unit gave me the extra option of also changing the subwoofer's time alignment, level and crossover as well. I didn't know aftermarket head units were so advanced
Unless you really think that the stock 10 speakers have fallen apart and are really crappy, I'd suggest trying a really nice head unit. Mine were in good shape and I can honestly say that these blow away my previous cars' audi BOSE and BMW HK systems. yeah, they are factory premium units but they still cost me $550-$700.

All the speaker sizes are a bit odd. The front has an approximately 5-1/4" woofer (can't have too much depth) and a 3.5" midrange behind the grill, plus the tweeter. On my son's car he converted this to a high quality 2-way system using Diamond Motorsport speakers and blocked off the midrange.
The rear has a 6-1/2" woofer, no midrange, and a built-in tweeter hidden behind the grill.

Yeah, the fronts are 5 1/4" and the smaller one is right at 3" I'm pretty sure- it's pretty small- it DOES make a dif though- I have 968 door panels that I bought used, WITH speakers, as my Turbo S front speakers were gone except for the 1" tweeters- the 968 panels came w/the 5 1/4" and the tweeters up top, but NOT the 3"- the blank was there, so it wasn't removed or anything- it was then that I found out that SOME of the cars (968's and S2's only I believe) came w/8-speaker systems instead of the 10-speaker set-up- they were missing that little 3" AND the 3-way X-over.
I went through the # thing, as I decided to replace ALL of them- my rears were blown- I got a list of #'s for 968 replacements- I checked a few of them against the 951S ones- it was WIERD- some of the 968 ones were cheaper and some of the 951S ones were cheaper, but they're ALL the same- slightly dif #'s b/t 968 & 951S It was REALLY going to cost some bucks to do in the end- the 6 1/2's were going to run ~$125ea, while the adapter/mounting brackets (for the front) were like $40ea- it added up quickly- you can have someone make an adapter plate for the rears- all you need is the OUTLINE and mark where the mounting holes are- you'll need to know exactly what the new speakers are to trace around for the INSIDE though, so you should probably buy a new set first, IF you're interested in doing this- I bought a set of brand new Kappa coaxes for ~$99- they are pretty impressive- I don't have enough power to run them yet though as I haven't hooked up my small amp yet, but I have the speakers in their wooden adapter plates installed, and they fit GREAT!
For the fronts, I'm planning to eventually (when I get around to mounting my new 968 mirrors, handles, 1-touch up/down window switches and blinking LED door lock buttons) to mount some old Infinity Kappa separate 6 1/2's in the STOXK Turbo s location- I've never heard of anyone else doing this, but I THINK I can get it to work- I will have to trim the edges of the speakers though- one reason for usign the old ones I'm going to take as much as I can off- probably about 3/4"- take it right up to the edge of the inner section of woofer- I wont do it on the sides, but really top and bottom- I'll also have to open up hte door panel a little bit to allow for the larger magnet to sit back in there a little more- I don't want to do it if I can't get the pockets back on over it- I MAY have to trim out the bottom edge of the pocket, RIGHT underneath the actual speaker too- I know how I'm going to mount them- I wont be using the plastic adapters obviously. Anyway, I've been planning this for over a year now, but hopefully will get to it before too long...
I'm stil looking for the speaker # list I had- if I find it, I'll send it to you- I MAY have thrown it away though, as I looked last night and didn't have any luck...

Herre are the #'s for the 968- they are the same- I had the #'s for both the Turbo S AND 968, and the prices were different- some were cheaper for the 968 and pther's were cheaper for the Turbo S- they should be EXACTLY the same- they ARE THE SAME OPTION- I think it was 490- anyway, here are the #'s and prices for them at my dealer....
BTW- the first set of digits on EACH ONE is 944- I'll skip those okay...
645 508 00 5 14/" $32.50
645 507 00 3.0" $25.80
645 506 00 1DB FT $34.60
555 143 02 Frame $44.95
645 201 00 X-over $36.40
645 032 00 6 1/2" $127.10
645 049 00 1DB RT $51.20
Okay- FT & RT- I'm almost POSITIVE that FT is front tweeter and RT is rear tweeter- the "frame" is the plastic adapter piece that holds the front speakers in place- the 5 1/4" & 3"- the X-over is the 3-way crossover- I took all these #'s down w/a salesman in the parts dept at the dealer- they were on microfisch, so it was a PITA- I'm pretty sure it's all correct though....
Oh, these are the screw, and do NOT start w/944- 900 143 151 02 ($.45 for a set of 8- might be worth it too, IMO)....
EDIT: Something interesting- I called Don Rosen Imports and the prices were the following-
5 1/4"- $42.63
3.0"- $27.96
FT- $15.27
X-over- $28.60
6 1/2"- $80.52
RT- $35.62
ALSO- the X-over is # 944 645 437 00 at Don rosen- I MAY have been checking it under the 951- like i said, it's funny- you just want to try to be sure you're getting the 3-way instead of the 2-way, which they should have made, but I'm not positive they did- it get's kind of weird... Anyway, good luck...
