Clutch won't release completely

Clutch won't release completely
1987 944 Turbo with 75,000 (mainly freeway) miles on clutch.
Experiencing difficulty shifting in and out of gears. The disc appears to be dragging on either the flywheel or press plate preventing the clutch from total disengagement. No noises or chattering. I've checked the clutch travel at the throwout arm and readjusted to maximum, no help. Trans won't stop spinning when clutch is disengaged, but the synchros will allow me to shift. I'm afraid it's replace clutch time, even though the clutch appears ok except for improper disengagement.
Has anyone experienced this problem, and have any other ideas which might prevent pulling the clutch? As always help is much appreciated.

It sure sounds like a new clutch is in order. If it is the original clutch, the rubber center hub might have come apart and is stopping the clutch from releasing. I am surprised you are still able to drive it.

I had the same problem with my 1986 Turbo. Clutch was not slipping but I could not get it into gears without gridding. Reverse was imposible to get into. I replaced the clutch and found many of the small springs in the clutch broken and all over the inside of the clutch. Now that I replaced the clutch the car shifts great. I replaced the master and slave clutch cylinder also. Make sure you replace the rear main seals and all the clutch bears, shafts and bolts while in there. I bought my clutch and parts from Jason at Paragon. He can hook you up. <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

Your clutch fork could also be breaking. Mine cracked and bent back so that it could not engage the throw out bearing all the way. Although I could hear a bit of chattering, since the bearing was not held snugly anymore....

Turbo cars, unlike the N/A and 87-88S models don't have a rubber dampered clutch disc, the turbo has a spring dampened center.
With the car on stands, remove the rubber inspection plug at the bell housing, grab the blue shaft coupler, and with a friend pressing the C-pedal you should be able to freely turn the coupling.
Possible causes are, bent fork, damaged pressure plate where TO bearing attaches, broken spring or other debris sandwiched between the clutch plate and flywheel or pressure plate not allowing the clutch disc to freewheel.
More unlikely but possible, a seized pilot bearing in the crankshaft that has welded itself to the input shaft tip and the crankshaft ID...
Cheers
Good luck....
