California insurance question

I have a friend who's son was involved in a minor fender bender. The boy was just driving down the road in the left hand lane of a two lane road and someone made a right hand turn out of a side street, crossed the right hand lane into the left hand lane striking the boy's car. Th eother driver admitted responsibility (just plain didn't see the bay's car) and his insurance company said they'll pay up - just find/pick a shop and they'll take care of it.
Here's my question: Is there any way to go about getting paid out for the claim, allowing the boy to do the work for himself? He's mechanically inclined and would like to 'earn' a little something by doing the work himself (he'd actually like to get the whole car painted too...).

Sure, just ask the other ins co to make the check out to him. Reason: haven't found a shop yet, still looking. The ins co would be happy to settle it out immediately and not have it cost them any more money in hidden item repairs.
