I've been looking at gear ratios on these two transmissions (16k and 16r I think) How much Tq and HP can a 944 tranny take? My 951 is mostly stock, (Weltmeister chips and 3mm wastegate shims, K&N drop in filter) so I think I'm only getting maybe 225-240 hp to the trannsmission. I'm looking for a little more off the line punch, without killing the clutch or trying for 350hp. The lower gear ratio in the NA tranny looks like I would get this, and the 5th gear is far enough out that I would still turn low RPM's while highway cruising. How much can it handle?

Depending on your budget, you could go for custom gears- Powerhaus II (no relation to Poweraus)- 968 6-sp w/custom gears for the best of both worlds- ~$300/gear- they say 1st can't be changed- also, the speedo prob- not sure if anyone's made it work yet(?). You could also get custom gears for 951 trans- still wouldn't change 1st. What are the 944's redlines anyway?
I like taller gearing, but mine's a street car, AND I'm always dreaming of a John Anderson optimized 3.1L turbo or turbo charged 968, etc- I could get away w/MUCH taller gearing then and STILL out accelerate Viper's- ever seen a Viper's gearing? The best mod for them is a shorter FD (taller #)- from something like ~3.30 to ~3.65. John A. might have something HE can do for your gears- he can do everything else
- John? Have you ever mated a dif trans or custom gears to one of these 2.8L+ beasts of your's?

i would not recommend na trans in a turbo have seen several broken ring and pinions in na cars and these parts are MUCH beefyer in a turbo trans. You might consider a 944S2 trans as it is abasically a turbo unit with a lower final drive ratio. if you run high speed you will run out of gear though.
