in order to get the best performance out of the car the a/f needs to be close to perfect?
what device is needed to do this? is there a guage/meter/tool etc. available that can help do this? aside from having it on a dyno? can any backyard/weekend mech do this?

The dyno doesn't do the adjustments. You need an adjustment device installed in your car, like the Guru Racing programer or Huntley ARC2 or Lindsey digital MAF. Then you do a dyno run and adjust whatever is off line. The Guru programer allows you to do adjustments at idle, cruising, half throttle and WOT (wide open throttle), the others don't. With a wide band sensor you can do your own measurements on the street (best with two people in the car), write down the A/F at different driving situations (idle, crusing, half throttle, WOT), and then do the adjustments. When you install a wide band sensor you need to install a separate O2 sensor in your car. The sources are:

or the cheap solution (the best of the cheap ones) which uses your existing O2 sensor:

i just ordered an o2 sensor from paragon, it'll be here friday. what can i do to do the adjustments.
i had travis pop the cap off the afm already. i'd like to know how to do the adjustment myself with f@#$*&g up the eng.
what are the proceedures ( in weeekend mech terms)

Please reread my post. With your new O2 sensor you won't get A/F readings. You either need a wide band sensor from one of the sources mentioned above or at least "the cheap solution" which you can connect to your new O2 sensor.
You also need a programer (Guru, Huntley ARC2, Lindsey MAFtuner). Good luck.
