Post How to clean an intercooler

I've removed the intercooler on my '89 t/s. What's the best way to clean it now? I seem to recall a similar thread some months ago but don't recall what the response was.

I cleaned mine by pouring a cupfull or two of degreaser into the IC and then shaking it for a while (I prefer my intercoolers shaken .. not stirred - )

I then hosed it out and repeated that process a few times until the water coming out was absolutely clear and free of contaminants.

Use plenty of degreaser or Chemtool. Shake and rinse out till it comes clean.

I had metal in mine from a shredded turbo, it was ultrasonically cleaned to get the metal out. Otherwise, the degreasaer should work fine.

Does it have to be dry inside the IC in order for you to install it and drive again?

Have a local shop hot tank it. Cost $25 for me.

No. The engine can ingest an awful lot of water, and it will like it, before you start thinking about things like hydrolocking it.

However, depending on your local water supply you might want to consider pouring in a gallon or two of distilled water for the final flush so you don't have deposits dry on. This is probably way overkill.

I didn't notice much difference, if any, when I did mine. It was fairly gunky and I'm sure it should be done on a regular basis.
