Post K27 and autothority chips????Help

I was wondering if you can use a k27/6 turbo in my 86 944 turbo with my regular autothority stage 2 chips. Also I do have a late model 28 pin dme computer instead of the earlier 24 pin if that helps any.

Well, it's not a black and white simple yes/no answer to that question. Sure you can use that turbo with those chips, but what kind of a result will you get? That's the real question.

The AutoThority Stg.2 chips were programmed for a completely bone-stock unmolested car with but ONE change only! That's the STOCK turbo bumped up in boost to about 1-bar with their modified jetted banjo-bolt. That means the chips were programmed for a turbo that peaks at 1-bar of boost, yet still rolls off to about 0.75-bar at redline because of the turbo running out of capacity and getting inefficent.

Let's say now, that you replace that turbo with one that can maintain the same max-boost of 1-bar, but all the way to redline. What will be the result? You'll have an optimal mixture in the mid-range at 1-bar (same as stock K26 turbo), but in the higher-RPM ranges, you'll be way too lean (because of extra flow/boost & air compared to stock turbo). If you bump up the fuel-pressure to match the higher flow at high-RPMs, you'll have a way too rich mixture in the mid-range.

So at a minimum, you'll need chips programmed for the flow characteristics of a K27 turbo. Ideally, you want a custom-programmed set of chips for YOUR particular car and its configuration. This means dyno testing and custom chip-mapping. Then, if ou make ANY modifications later that changes the flow-rate (increases power), then you'll need to burn ANOTHER set of chips to match this new configuration.

Hey Danno, since even a change in Boost pressure will change everything with a set of burned chips, is there a way I can take my boost up to say 1.2 bar and just leave it there, and get a set of chips burned for that level, and whatever mods i've done, WITHOUT spending $400 on an EBC?

Obviously I can get a Manual Boost controller for around $50, but I don't need anything that will change the boost level, rather something that'll just set it at 1.2 bar and leave it there.. then i'll controll boost with my foot.

What's there that'll do that? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
