Is there any way to determine which lifter is bad (noisy) within a set once they're out of the car?
I knew which one was bad in the car, but like a knucklehead I didn't realize that the lifter "buckets" were part of the "valve cover" and not the "head" and they all fell out when I removed it. Doh!

Oh no... you want to keep them in order.
Anyway, you can put them in a container of clean oil, and push down on the plunger. If it does not push, or return, it might be bad.
Before replacing, put the lifter in a container of mineral spirits, soak, and try to get the plunger to free up. Sometimes this works well and can fix a noisy lifter. Be sure to prime with oil before install.
