Just starting out - what to upgrade first?
Hello all. I have had my 951 for about two years now. It is an 87 with 40k miles on it (10k when I bought it). I have but an LBE and HR chips in and would like to hear various suggestions for the next upgrades. What are the various paths people have taken. I was thinking of using SFR for the rest of my work from here on out. The price is right with them and they seem to be good quality. Any suggestions? Any webpages to your cars and upgrades would be great too.

I highly recomend SFR. As for upgrades it depends on how fare you want to go. I am haveing SFR build a 2.8 for me. If you want to see the rout I'm going check out THE BIG PLAN on the 924/944/951/968 board. An SFR MAF might be a good upgrade.

For next steps I would suggest upgrading the exhaust. Going to 3" exhaust makes a big change in power and turbo spool-up time. A cat replacement pipe AKA "Test pipe" is one of the best bang for the buck upgrades you can get. These cars burn pretty clean when in proper tune, mine still passes the state emissions test with flying colors even w/o the cat but YMMV.
I'd have to say that SFR has the best deal out there for exhaust on our cars, can't go wrong with their set-up.
After that it really depends on how far you want to go, options start getting more $ per HP after that, but you should be somewhere around 230HP at the wheels with just exhaust and the mods you have already.

Andy,
I hope you've been enjoying your 951 as much as I've been enjoying mine!
I concur with seattle944t. The exhaust upgrade/cat removal was a huge improvement on my car. However, don't forget the upgrades that you will feel every second you're driving the car - Suspension! <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

The test pipe is nice. Quicker spoolup more motor sound and you can hear the turbo slghtly. I don't see how you could get more than 10hp, if that, beyond the test pipe be changing any of the exhaust system - just my opinion. I would get the thicker spark plug wires. I lean more towards lowering and stiffening the car after chips, lbe, and wires. The cup anti sway bars too of course. After that learn how to drive the car at it's limits at the PCA and other DE's and you will find that the car is probably faster than you are and there will be no need to anything else.
