Post How is a Dyno different...

...than having a recordable boost, rpm, etc (like an Apexi EBC) device along with some sort of digital A/F tuning/monitoring

...seems like you could pull away from a stop light, and look at all the info you would get from a dyno pull

I think about this when everyone talks about the dyno time they want to avoid - tuning after every piece of an upgrade.

...someone correct my confusion

You don't run out of road on a dyno... . 1st gear isn't great for tuning, nor is 2nd gear. It takes at least 3rd gear to get a good accurate load for testing. I've done testing in 4th gear on the road, and it's a bit scary trying to read stuff at 140mph or so heh.

After a visit to the new Mustang Dyno in town, I learned a bit on this topic. The Mustang dyno, as discussed in the "other" dyno topic, has variable resistance to the drive wheels, provided by a huge electric motor fighting the driven wheels. This way, you can get the car rolling, under load, in 4th gear, wide open throttle, and hold it there to tweak and tune. I'm not sure if I've got the cajones' to get under the hood at 4k under full load, but it can be done and that is a great way to get real world numbers.
While the Apexi gives you great feedback on mixtures, boost and RPM, how good is it at calculating the final desired result, hp/tq? Honest question, I haven't played with the Apexi..

Those of us with real time engine control can vouch for the veracity of rage2's reply. There's a whole lot goin' on real fast when your foot is planted to the floor in 3rd or 4th with well over 300 ft/lbs drivin' the train. The dyno is much calmer. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Thanks for the replies all. Yeah I wasn't talking about actually finding rwhp. And I can imagine how fast things happen in 3rd or 4th gear with anything over stock (I can't wait! ), which is why I guess I was thinking primarily of the Apexi products. I know that the AVC-R will record up to a minute of data, displayed in graph form. And I'm assuming the AFC by apexi does the same thing (graph A/F versus rpm). This way the only thing you have to watch while doing a "pull" is the officers flashing lights in your rearview

.....does anyone have any experience with the mysterious Apexi AFC?

It's good for really mild mods, just changing a/f here and there. I wouldn't trust it where you have to change fuel by over 20%.
