Default Which oil thread?

Hi,
I'm wondering which oil thread I should use for my 944? I have heard that the composition of oil threads is not what it was. Most oil threads now seem to have less ZDDP in them. I'm wondering if I should change from my current oil thread to a diesel oil thread or maybe an additive thread?

I've even heard that most current oil threads break down quicker than the old ones...

Racing oil threads seem to be the best but you do have to change them more often.

What to do?

Hi Patrick, thanks for the link. That oil thread was 88 pages long. Do you think that means it will retain its viscosity better when things heat up?

I guess technically this is an "oil thread" thread. I guess this has been done before. Can anyone direct me to an ""oil thread" thread" thread?

Ha, this oil thread is the best oil thread ever in oil thread history.

It is now!
That Pelican thread is about the best there is on the subject. It's easy enough to skim through.

OK, looks like I'm going to use the Pelican oil thread for my 944. Do I need to do anything special to flush out the Rennlist oil thread before I change over? Not sure if the Pelican oil threads and Rennlist oil threads are compatible.

Make sure that it is compatible with the transaxle oil thread that you are using.

In reality there might be two different answers –
If you track your car you will need an oil that can survive at very high temps without breaking down
If you don’t track your car then your concerns may be more towards an oil that deals with contamination well (944 turbos tend to have more blow by and carbon issues than most engines)

My usually advise is not to trade quality for quantity – by that I mean don’t by the fancy $15 per quart oil and then use it for 15k miles – only buy oil that you can afford to change every 5k miles (or less if you track it a lot).

Hi Chris, thanks for your advice, off-topic though it is

Actually I was just having some fun - I am bemused at the number of "which oil?" threads and thought it would be fun to start a "which oil thread?" thread...

We now return you to your original programming.

Cheers,
Mike
