Angry Metal shavings in blown Bypass valve?

I took off my bypass valve the other day and noticed that there was aluminum shavings in it.Upon further inspection I took the IC out and noticed that in the bottom of it there were pieces of chewed up metal.I took the turbo out and it spins freely and there is a little play in it also. Also the hot side comp.fins are really chewed up.
Where can these metal pieces/shavings come from?
BTW I sent the turbo to Lindsey to get it rebuilt and to see of he could ID the metal pieces found in the IC.
Thanks
Thanks,

your turbo is hosed - that's the cold side fin edges most likely... you weren't running a pre-turbo water injection system or anything were you?

No, Everything on this car is stock, but it has been neglected for the past 10 years.I think it was just my turbo that went, but I am not sure since about the same time the car wouldn't start.
Thanks,

Take a look at the inside bolts (3 of them) that hold the air filter box to the AFM.

Especially the lower forward one. That is hard to put a standard wrench on it to tighten and more than one guy has done a poor job of tightening and had the bolt back out and get sucked into the turbo. Turbos don't like eating steel bolts.

The odd thing is the car ran great when I drove it the night before it did not start. It turns over normal, does not sound strange when tring to start.
The metal pieces aren't similar to a bolt or bearing or anything that I've seen except for maybe 1 piece looks like it maybe a fin of some kind but rather thick. The bolts to the airbox were loctited in when I put it on last summer.
Very Strange!!!
