Default Anyone familiar with Turbonetics Turbos?

I purchased a "stage 3, 60-1 hi-fi, 16mm ceramic BB bearing housing, stage 3 turbine wheel, 8cm hot side from Tim @ SFR. When I purchased this turbo, Tim told me to remove the oil restrictor prior to installation. I have had this thing on for almost 2 years now and it leaks oil like crazy. First it was the mount being different on the bottom which required an additional gasket and liberal use of high temp sealant. Now there is oil leaking from what appears to be the center section of the turbo where the hot and cold sides are joined. I also have shaft play and the intercooler pipes have a little too much oil in them. It also doesn't seem to pull as hard as before. The turbo has about 24 race days on it.

Tim told me that if I had any sort of warranty claim, to put the restrictor back in before shipping it back because the wouldn't honor the warranty without it.

My question is: by removing this oil restrictor, did this somehow cause my oil issues?

I'm pretty sure the BB CHRAs require less oil than journals to begin with. I don't know why Tim would have told you to remove it...

To be honest, I can't remember why he said to remove it. I do, however, remember him telling me to put it back if I had a warranty issue.

Does anyone know if there could be any ill effects to the oiling system of the car if this restrictor is in place - like too much pressure in the balance shaft housing? The oil just drains back to the pan, so it doesn't effect anything else down stream.

Actually, my office is just about 5 miles from his shop. I may pay him a visit, but was looking for some other opinions on this. I'm a little leery at this point.

Here is a good solution to the return leak.

There were several long post about using a restrictor to limit oil into this turbo. I know many have done this to reduce oil consumption.

• Excessively high oil pressure at idle may cause oil leakage and/or smoking at idle or deceleration

I just had a 50 trim dual BB Turbonetics rebuilt in Oceanside. It is working great, and was only about $300. Maybe this will help if anything. Looks like you are in SD, you should pm me and see if we can help each other out and network.

Let me know If I can help one way or the other.

Thanks for the info Brian! I think I'm going to contact Turbonetics directly to discuss this.

Are you running the oil restrictor?
