Default Very Loud Backfire Engine Died Now wont Start Any Ideas

Well I was taking the car out for a spin for about 15 minutes. Had a few spirited runs and then was heading home. Going about 25 miles an hour and heard a loud bang out the tailpipe and saw what I beleive to be a flame. Engine stalled immediately and I coasted into a church parking lot near my house.

I opened the hood and inspected the timeing belt which was still in one peice. I then tried to start the car up again. It turns over but it wont stay running. It starts for a few seconds but sputters and turns off no matter how much gas I try to give it. I then hear some sputtering popping out the tailpipe when I give it some gas and then it dies. It wont stay running more than 1 or 2 seconds.

Any ideas guys? I really could use some help!

Check the couplings for the boost hoses, you may have popped one off, or tore one.

Sounds a little like rod bearings to me.

Are you reffering to the vacuum hoses at the intake? I looked around the best I could and I could not see any of my vacuum hoses off. My oil pressure was good and the car did not appear overheated. I just replaced the spark plugs and wires a few weeks ago.

My initial thoughts: Skipped some teeth on the timing belt or bad coil

Rod bearing. Wow that would suck. I hope your wrong but fear you could be right. Just put this car back together. Previous owner spun the bearing and had the car in peices when I bought it.

You don't usually see a rod bearing cause an engine to run bad and then stall. If he can still turn it over with normal force, it's probably a sensor. I'd check speed/ref sensors, TPS, coil, etc...

I'm talking about any of the connections from the turbo outlet to the throttle body. Usually the connection at the intercooler pops off first, but check them all.

Thanks for you input guys. I dont think it is the speed referance sensors since the car does turn over briefly. I have been having problems with my throttle position sensor and have been haveing some weird high idle problems as of late. I think I may replace the coil and TPS and see if that fixes anything.

I 2nd the recommendation to check all couplers to and from the intercooler pipes. If one of those pops off or pops through, that type of symptom can result. I would also check for AFM/MAF related issues since the car will start and run briefly before it dies again.

Curious, What part of the symptoms makes you think Rod Bearings?

Clown: it sounds ignition based to me. Check your cap, rotor, coil, and Timing. Giving us an idea of modifications would help also.

Thanks guys. I have not had a chance to look at the car again since last night. After work I will dive in a little deeper. I really hope my timing belt did not slip. I plan on replacing the coil and possibly the TPS which I have been having problems with since I put my car back together a couple weeks ago.

I also installed my rebuilt Super 53 turbo/ C-Tune from Rogue/ New Spark Wires/ New O2 sensor.

I also have a AFPR/ Full 3" Exhaust / Tial 38 DP / MPC

Car has been running good for about two weeks since installing the C-tune and rebuild turbo. Except it has been having high idle issues. Sometimes the car would idle around 4K rpm and stay there while going down the road even with my foot off gas. That issue went away though the first week and have not had any problems as of late.

Reading his post reminded me of what my car did when i spun a bearing. Loud noises which lead to the car shutting off..

Ok well been working on it the past few hours now and still nothing. This is what I have done in no particular order:

1.Took the C-Tune DME chip out and replanted it firmly.
2.Unhooked the DME and KLR and then hooked them back firmly. Tried hitting them while turning ignition also but nothing
3. Tested spark to the coil - GOOD
4. Tested spark to the 4 wires - GOOD
5. Replaced Distributor Cap just for fun
6. Replaced the Throttle Position Sensor with a known working one
7. Took the fuel rail off and all four ports injection holes (ports) were wet with fuel
8. Pushed the metal clips on and off of all of the fuel injectors
9. Checked the entire engine bay for loose vacuum connections- Everything GOOD
10. Unhooked the MAF plug pushed the wires around and then plugged it back in.
11. Loosened both Speed Referance Sensors and tried starting in several different positions
12. Tried to start the car multiple times throughout the process
13. Got very frustrated with the lower screws on the TPS and Distrutor Cap
14. Contemplating getting it towed to a professional
15. Neighbor had pitty on me and towed the car up the hill to my house with his truck.

Car Still builds great Oil Pressure and Fuel Pressure! Did I miss something?
