Help - Huge plume of smoke from tailpipe
At the track today, I was making huge clouds of white thin smoke whenever I got hard on the power. I topped the crankcase off (above top mark) as normal, so I don't lose oil pressure in the corners (I was always told 3/4 quart above top line). Car has never smoked like this before. Could this just be a case of adding a bit too much oil. The coolant level hasn't dropped and it still looks clear - oil is not foamy. Could it be turbo seals?
What d'yall think?
Thanks!

Pull one of the intercooler pipes and see if there is a ton of residue on them. Look into the intercooler itself and see if it is coated.
3/4 over is high, I usually go 1/4qt over full. If you are sloshing around a lot, you could suck some into the oil evaporator canister, then into the intake of the turbo causing the nasty coating in the intake, and following with the billowing clouds.

I know you said white smoke, and that is usually coolant, but since there was no coolant loss, I would suspect oil.
Oil vapor can look white in certain light.

GrantG, when I lost my turbo the only time it made white smoke was when it was at idol. When I was on the gas all was well so I dont think it is the turbo. It seems more like the begining of a bad headgasket. Put your hand behind the exhaust and see/feel if you have some antifreeze sputtering out on your hand and smell it. Big plumes of white smoke is what I had when I blew my head gasket.

Sounds like the headgasket to me... you might want to pull the spark plugs and check to see if they are either wet or very clean, if so, you will likely be pulling the head VERY soon. What you describbe is similar to what happened to me with my '86 at 150k miles.
Good luck!
