Question GT Porsche Magazine...

Does anyone subscribe to that UK magazine "GT Purely Porsche"?

It costs $112/year (12 issues)...

I am just wondering if it is worth $10/issue.

I picked up a copy while on vacation in Bermuda this past summer. It's very high quality, on par with Excellence, good writing, lots of photos. It's good to get a different perspective sometimes by reading how people in the rest of the world perceive things.

While I can't get enough reading material about Porsche, I haven't committed to spending over $100 / year on a single publication.

How bad do you need your Porsche fix today?

It's a beautiful coffee table magazine, I love it!! More pictures, less technical than excellence or 911 & Porsche...

Previous copies have had articles on 944 S2, recent edition compared 968 cab vs 944 turbo cab.

It's a fabulous magazine! My local Barnes & Noble sells it for eight dollars and change.

Most Brit and European mags are really high quality in terms of photo quality, printing and paper etc. Worth it if you're into magazines.

I prefer to pick up my high price mags in person, gives you a chance to browse.

I have subscriptions to Excellence, 911 & Porsche World, GT Purely Porsche.

Each has there strenghts:

Excellence - Best for technical information. Jim Pasha and others have written many 924/944/968 articles (see a list of articles below).

911 & Porsche World - At first you would think it would be good for 924/944/968 owners as they have a more "budget" orientated view of the world but inevitably the articles have very little meat. Take the recent 944 project car articles. They document various things they had done but they don't get into detail about how to do it.

GT Purley Porsche - Coffee table magazine. Great photos. More of a lifestyle type magazine rather than a more technical publication like Excellence. They make a lot of mistakes though (e.g. in response to a readers letter they said you *had* to replace 944 front struts in their entirety neglecting to mention Koni inserts, described the 996 GT3 as a lighter version of the stock 996 when in fact its curb weight is little heavier than the stock car sue to the motor, etc). I think this is due to the inexperience of the staff (its less than a year since they started) and hopefully this will right itself in due course.

Here's a list of Excellence articles I compiled. Its a NA orientated list. There were plenty of 951 articles in Excellence, its just that I'm personally more interested in the NA cars.

Karl,
Thanks for the directory, it's great. Too bad I've only been subscribing since '97.

GT & Purely Porsche is a nice mag, but like Karl said, they're not quite up to the tech level that you find in Excellence even though the binding and photography are "book quality."

It was nice of them to start out trying to take the early watercooled cars into account, but I was just flipping through this month's issue today at the local Borders and it's back to 911s as usual.

This month's comparison is a 964C2 vs. a 964C4. A friend of mine used to have the C4 and it was interesting to read how the C2 is clearly truer to the 911's character, whereas the C4 was the beginning of all the fancy electronics that would culminate in the overly civilized 996.

I got a kick out of reading the 968 cab/951 cab comparison in an earlier issue since I own a factory 951 cab, myself. They tend to focus excessively on aesthetic impact in these Brit mags sometimes and in the article I think they were too taken by the 968's more modern looks to fully appreciate the raw appeal of the turbo cab.

This month they identify the 996 carrera 2 as the be-all-&-end-all of Porsche cars. I particularly like the photo of the "test drive staffer" wearing flip flops. A far cry from the 951S vs. 930 article from 1989 in a U.S. mag featuring professionals like Derek Bell, recently posted to the board by Dan Nguyenphuc.

Since they let you practically browse whatever you want at B&N or Borders, I just read what interests me and put it back when I'm done. It's nice to save money, but I also hate clutter and I already have Panos all over my apartment.

Thanks for all the posts everyone. I think I will probably end up folding and buying a subscription... sounds like a quality publication. I just wanted to check before spending the dough since I will no doubt be explaining to my wife why we "needed" another Porsche magazine.
