Post What is this noise?

Well I have a job again and just in time for the latest noise that started this evening. Its a knocking type sound that only happens when Im in gear and accelerating. As soon as I left off the gas it goes away. It is loudest at low speeds while accelerating. Im thinking the fuel pump. How hard is this to replace on an 87 turbo?

Thanks,

Mark

when i first got my 89 NA i had a klunking from the rear and it was dry wheel bearings. check and make sure it is properly lubed. I doubt it is the fuel pump if the noise is a pretty good klunk.

Its a clicking/clunking sound from the back. I considered wheel bearings but it goes away as soon as I let off the gas so thats why I thought it was the fuel pump. Speeds up as I'm accelerating and stops as soon as I let off the gas or while Im cruising at a constant speed. I also couldnt hear it while taking a curve with my foot off the gas.

How hard is it to fix the rear CV joints? Odd that the noise goes away when I let up on the gas. Can someone explain that one?

Thanks,

Mark

I agree with jimbo. Check your axles.

Try to twist the shaft and see if there is any play. There should be none.

Also move them side to side, you should have movement on both.

Then turn in three circles and tap your heels together............

Usually bad CV-joints does not make sounds when acclerating.Sound comes when left off the gas.
Usually they make sound when turning.
Replacing CV joints is quite easy.

I agree with Jimbo on this one. I had the same thing happen to me. Under acceleration the load on the CV joint is greater which is why you hear it. The noise will get progressively louder if not fixed. I purchased a new CV joint from gprparts.com for a little over $80 and picked up a new boot too. You will need a 12 point star socket(I think it is 8mm) to do the job. After removing mine, I decided to completely clean it and repack both CV joints with grease (what a messy job)and keep the new one as a spare as I did not see any flaws. It works perfectly now and the job is not that difficult... just filthy. You can also pick up complete unit to install for a reasonable price. This is the option the a Porche mechanic might talk you into since it wont take them more than 30 minutes to replace.

Well I dropped my car off yesterday for a 4 wheel alignment and it turns out it wasnt the cv joint afterall :-) My parking brake cable was loose and they fixed that for free. Bad news is that something is wrong at the passenger rear wheel because they couldnt align it within specs. They suspect something is bent. I guess I will have to take it to my porsche mechanic in the future for that one unless anyone has ideas on how to figure it out myself.
